Laxman Pai

Laxman Pai was born on January 21, 1926 in Margao in Laxman Pai's style was influenced by designs he was commissioned to do for execution on porcelain. He has a strong bent toward the lyrical, with emphasis on delicate and expressive line. His had experimented with abstract form also. He chose to give a visual interpretation, through colour and variety of lines, to the moods of the music as determined by the vibrations of the notes. His works speak of a visual poetry with a happy blend of tradition and modernity, of reality, of technical perfection and enthusiasm. Bright colours and strong lines create an unsentimental lyricism in his works. Laxman Pai belongs to the same early period of modern Indian and Goan art. Probably it was he who discovered the miniature style of painting that gave him a language to develop his own personal dialect. His style showed no preoccupation with colour, form on structure. Fancy and creative draughtsman ship has played an important part in his initial decorative detailed style. His images are generally graphic and representative of his fantastic excursions. His style is whimsical yet eclectic and serious in character. Pai is strongly attached to his environment. He constantly returns to his native land for symbols of expression. • The National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) will house the ‘Maharaja Collection’ of Air India artworks. An MoU was signed for handing over the priceless artefacts collection of Air India since 1953 to NGMA. • Air India has acquired and collected a massive number of valuable artworks from around the world consisting of paintings, sculptures, wooden carvings, glass paintings, decorative items, textile art, photographs and other objects. These art objects will be a part of the collection at NGMA. • The art collection includes works by eminent artists like B. Prabha, Shankar Palsikar, Lakshman Pai, Vasudev Gaitonde, M.F. Husain, S.H. Raza, K.H. Ara and Hari Ambadas Gade. It also includes works of art of living legends like Anjolie Ela Menon and Jatin Das that will enhance the NGMA collection further. Air India’s ‘Maharaja Collection’ at National Gallery of Modern Art soon

NEW DELHI: The capital’s prestigious National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) will be the new home to The art includes works by greats like M F Husain, Vasudev Gaitonde, B Prabha, Shankar Palsikar, Lakshman Pai, Arpana Caur, S H Raza, K H Ara and Hari Ambadas Gade. It also has works by living legends like Anjolie Ela Menon and Jatin Das. The Union aviation and culture ministries signed an MoU for the handing over of the artworks to NGMA on Wednesday. Over its 80-plus years of existence — first as an airline started by J R D Tata and then as a PSU before returning to the founder group last year — AI had acquired a large number of valuable artwork from around the world consisting of paintings, sculptures, glass paintings, decorative items, photographs and other objects. Once AI was re-privatised last year, the government had decided to shift the artwork collection from AI Building at Mumbai’s Nariman Point — a landmark that is being sold, possibly to the Maharashtra government — to NGMA. Union aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said the art collection “will spread awareness about Indian culture worldwide” and suggested that the same “should not be confined to Delhi, but be taken worldwide” to showcase India’s soft power. The artworks being handed over to NGMA not only contain modern art masterpieces but also have a wide range of exquisite handloom.
