‘Very intriguing’: Jairam Ramesh on more and more Indians renouncing citizenship

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh slammed the Centre over the increase in the number of Indians giving up on their citizenship and seeking citizenship abroad. 121,000 Indians gave up Indian citizenship in 2012, 226,000 did so in 2022 (Representative/File Photo) Calling it ‘intriguing’, Ramesh mentioned how there has been a huge surge in the number of Indians renouncing their citizenship over the last decade and cited government’s data in the Rajya Sabha according to which 121,000 Indians gave up Indian citizenship in 2012, and 226,000 did so in 2022. Taking this to Twitter, Ramesh said, “On Feb 9 2023 Dr. Jaishankar answered in RS that while 121000 Indians gave up Indian citizenship in 2012, 226000 did so in 2022. Very intriguing. So not just millionaires.” According to the report, ‘millionaires’ or ‘high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) refer to those with an investable wealth of $1 million or more. The Congress leader’s response came after a 2023 report by Henley Private Wealth Migration (HPWM), which tracks wealth and investment migration trends worldwide, suggested that India is likely to see an outflow of at least 6,500 high-net-worth individuals in 2023. (ANI Photo/Sanjay Sharma) (Sanjay Sharma) There should be no loss of life due to any disaster anywhere in the country, Union home minister Amit Shah said on Tuesday while announcing three schemes worth ₹8,000 crore related to disaster management that include modernisation of fire services, flood mitigation in seven major cities and prevention of landslides in 17 states. In the past nine years, the central government along with the states have crossed many milestones in managing disasters, Shah said at a meeting of the ministers of disaster management of states and union territories at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. The Centre will provide ₹5,000 crore to the state to modernise and expand fire brigade services. “We have prepared a detailed plan, which will be forwarded to you,” he said. To mitigate the impact of floods in urban areas, seven major cities including Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Pune will get a total of ₹2,500 crore, he said. Tamil Nadu withdraws general consent for CBI to probe cases in state: Report

The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday withdrew general consent given to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), ANI reported. The CBI will now need to get permission from Tamil Nadu Government to investigate in the state. The MK Stalin government's decision comes hours after state minister Nine states including West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Punjab and Rajasthan have already withdrawn general consent for CBI, which they call as a precaution against misuse of central agencies. New India Assurance Company apologizes for its Hindi circular

CHENNAI: New India Assurance Co Ltd on Tuesday apologized for issuing a circular on Hindi implementation in its offices. The company apologized after some Tamil Nadu politicians condemned it for issuing the "unjust circular." New India Assurance tweeted, "We believe in promoting a diverse and peaceful workplace that values local languages and cultures. We are completely aligned with and respectful of the rich cultural legacy and linguistic variety across the length and breadth of our magnificent country. If, advertently, we have hurt any sentiments, we sincerely apologize for the same," said the insurance company. In the circular titled "Check points for Hindi implementation," New India Assurance gave a series of instructions to make Hindi the only language of its official communication at all levels.
