Lawrence Bishnoi's Police Custody Extended By 3 Days By Delhi Court In Extortion Case

Accused Lawrence Bishnoi be produced before the concerned Court/Duty Magistrate on June 14, 2023, the court directed. The court remanded Sampat Nehra to judicial custody after nine days of police custody remand till June 25. Advocate Vishal Chopra appeared on behalf of Lawrence Bishnoi and did not oppose the extension of remand. The investigation officer (IO) produced Lawrence Bishnoi after 10 days of remand and sought four days' further extension on the ground that he is to be confronted with Akshay alias Balaji, to establish the source of weapon and money to purchase arms/ammunition, to unearth the chain of conspiracy in the present case and to establish the source of information regarding the complainant, and to apprehend other members of the nexus. The IO further submitted that accused Lawrence Bishnoi gave directions to accused Akshay to execute the plan and to supply the arms to the above said accused persons. It was also stated that one of the accused Kapil alias Nandu is outside India and he provided the information to the accused Lawrence Bishnoi for the purposes of the execution of the plan. Delhi prison officials on Sunday urged a city court to shift gangster Lawrence Bishnoi to Punjab’s Bathinda jail to avert any threats to the security in the Capital’s jails. The court agreed to the officials’ request and said that Bishnoi can be shifted to Bhatinda jail on June 14, when his remand ends, officials aware of the matter said. Officers said that the request was made taking cognisance of the recent violence episodes inside Tihar jail. (HT Archive) Sanjay Baniwal, director general (prisons), said that since Bishnoi’s presence in the Capital’s jails may lead to violence inside jails, the court was requested to transfer him. “He was brought here on remand by National Investigation Agency (NIA) from Gujarat... Later, he was taken on remand by the Delhi Police in an extortion case. Since his presence in Tihar or any other jails in Delhi may cause threat to members of his rival gangs or and his associates, we requested the court to shift Bishnoi. The cases against Bishnoi are mostly lodged in Punjab,” he said. By Arvind Ojha: A jail authority housing Lawrence Bishnoi on Sunday appealed to a Delhi court to shift the dreaded gangster to Punjab’s Bathinda jail to avert any threats to the law and order situation in the Delhi prison. Lawrence Bishnoi, charged with an extortion case, was presented before the court on Sunday (June 11), which extended his police custody till June 14. Taking cognisance of the Delhi jail authority’s appeal, the court agreed to shift Lawrence Bishnoi to Bathinda jail after the end of his police remand. The jail authority, in its application, said the law and order situation could be compromised if Bishnoi continues to be confined in the Delhi prison. It said that Bishnoi was taken in remand by the NIA from Bathinda jail and was later taken into custody by Gujarat Police and then by Delhi Police. Meanwhile, the court also asked the authorities to ensure the safety of Bishnoi. Lawrence Bishnoi was shifted to Delhi's Mandoli Jail from Ahmedabad's Sabarmati Central Jail last month. The gangster was taken to Gujarat last month by the state's Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) in connection with a case of cross-border smuggling of drugs. The Delhi police crime branch looked for an extension of remand for Lawrence Bishnoi to confront him with one more accused, Akshay alias Balaji, in Ganganagar, Rajasthan.
