Delhi's Lotus Temple: The Complete Guide

History The Baha'í faith is a relatively new religion that grew out of the Shi'ite branch of Islam in the mid 19th century. While Iran was experiencing widespread instability and turmoil, a 24-year-old merchant named Siyyid Ali Muhammad Shirazi claimed to be a messenger from God and a direct descendant of the prophet Muhammad. He called himself The Bab (The Gate) and started spreading a revolutionary message that paved the way for the foundation of the Baha'í faith. His main point was that a new prophet would appear after him to transform humanity. This contradicted a key a tenet of Islam, whereby Mohammad is the final prophet, and led to The Bab's execution in 1850. Subsequently, while persecuted and imprisoned, one of The Bab's followers had the revelation that he was the manifestation of God that The Bab talked about. He called himself Baha'u'llah (the Glory of God) and went on to write the scriptures that form the basis of the Baha'í faith. After he died in 1892, his eldest son Abdu'l-Baha became the interpreter of his teachings and served as the head of the religion until 1921. He was succeeded by his grandson, Shoghi Effendi, who became the Guardian of the Baha'í faith and helped spread it worldwide. A goal of the Baha'í faith is to build Houses of Worship (Mashriqu'l-Adhkar) all over the world. Lotus Temple: A Symbol Of Excellence In Modern Indian Architecture

The Baha'i House of Worship, popularly known as the is not only a symbol of excellence in modern Indian architecture but also one of the most visited religious buildings in the world. The Temple located on a 9.7-hectare site near Nehru Place in South Delhi, is a place of worship open to all races, religions and castes. The form of this House of Worship takes the shape the lotus, a flower considered sacred by most Indians. It is designed to reflect the simplicity, clarity and freshness of the Baha'i Faith and to act as a symbol of the unity of mankind and religions. The architect, The structure is composed of three ranks of nine petals each, springing from a podium which elevates the building above the surrounding plain. The first two ranks curve inward, embracing the inner dome, while the third layer curves outward to form canopies over the nine entrances. The double-layered interior dome, modelled on the innermost portion of the lotus, comprises 54 ribs with concrete shells in between. The central hall has a diameter of 34 metres and a height of 33.6 metres above the podium. It is ringed by nine arches which provide the main support for the superstructure. With a seating capacity of 2,200 the hall has no idols, no photographs and no priests.
