A biting cold wave swept north and northwest India on Monday with the minimum temperature settling in the range of one to three degrees Celsius in many parts. With the frigid northwesterly winds from the Himalayas setting in over the plains, it is likely to get even colder in the region in the next two days. The national Capital recorded its lowest temperature this season with the mercury dropping to 1.4 degrees Celsius, during the wee hours of Monday. This is also the second lowest for the month of January in the last one decade . The previous low was observed at 1.1 degrees Celsius on Jan 1, 2021. The minimum temperature in Delhi dropped by nine notches in two days. It was 10.2 degrees Celsius on Saturday and 4.7 degrees Celsius on Sunday. The maximum temperature was recorded 17.8 degrees Celsius which gave much relief from the cold wave in the day. The temperature is likely to drop 1-2 degrees celsius from Tuesday on many parts of north India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert in the national capital region for the next six days starting, Monday, owing to the upcoming severe cold wave in the national capital region. “Cold wave conditions over northwest India are likely to abate from January 19 as two western disturbances are likely to affect the western Himalayan region in quick succession,” the IMD said. National capital recorded minimum temperature of 9.2° C today, the lowest of this season so far. This temperature is 2°C lower than the normal. Meteorological office at Lodhi Road also recorded the same temperature. However, Mungeshpur and Ayanagar registered 8.7°C and 8.8°C respectively, again the lowest of this season so far. Earlier, the base observatory at Safdarjung recorded minimum temperature of 9.6°C and 9.8°C respectively on 17 thNov and 21 stNov respectively. A weak western disturbance, as an upper air trough is moving across Jammu & Kashmir and affecting weather in the higher reaches. Consequentially, a mild cyclonic circulation has been induced over North Rajasthan and Haryana. The winds in the lower levels have become light and variable with easterly component, over the national capital. This pattern is likely to last for the next 48hr. With the change in wind direction, slight rise in the humidity and drop in visibility conditions is quite likely. Mercury level is also likely to rise marginally by about a degree or so. The western disturbance will clear the region by 27 thNov. The minimum temperatures will drop again from 28 thNov and likely to remain in single digit for the remaining days of the month. Hazy mornings with nip in the air and pleasantly warm afternoons are likely on daily basis. No rainfall is expected over the capital city for the next one week.

For the second day on a trot, Delhi recorded a cold wave on Friday, with the minimum temperature at Ayanagar in southwest Delhi plunging to a numbing 1.8 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) data. Meanwhile, Safdarjung recorded a minimum temperature of 4.0°C and Delhi Ridge recorded 3.3°C said IMD. On Thursday, Delhi logged a minimum temperature of three degrees Celsius -- the lowest in January in two years -- making it cooler than several hill stations. "An Air India, Melbourne-bound, flight delayed by around 2:25 hours and rescheduled to depart at 16:45 hours," New Delhi Airport's live flight information said. "Dubai bound flight was rescheduled to 10:50 hours from 9:00 hours, Jeddah bound flight from 10:25 hours to 13:10 hours, SpiceJet flight, Dubai-bound, also rescheduled to 8:29 hours from 7:30 hours, Air India Flight, flying down to Kathmandu was delayed by 1:02 hours, Warsaw bound flight by 1:45 hours, Istanbul bound flight rescheduled to 7:38 hours from 6:55 hours, Dhaka bound flight from 6:30 hours to 7:31 hours, Phuket bound flight from 6:25 hours to 6:56 hours, and Bahrain bound flight from 5:40 hours to 6:53 hours," it added. Delhi records third lowest minimum temperature in last 50 years

By Press Trust of India: Delhi recorded an average minimum temperature of 6.7 degrees Celsius in December 2018, the third lowest in the last 50 years, the India Meteorological Department said Tuesday. According to the IMD, the fog coverage data at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Palam showed it was the clearest month in the last 22 years in terms of visibility. The lowest minimum temperature recorded was 2.6 degrees on December 29 which was the fourth lowest in the last 50 years after 2013, 1996 and 1973. The lowest minimum temperature ever recorded in Delhi is 0.0 degrees Celsius on December 27, 1930. There were 14 nights with minimum temperature below 6 degrees and eight nights when the minimum temperature was less than or equal to 4 degrees, thus, meeting the threshold of cold wave and ground frost conditions, the IMD said. The average maximum temperature during December was 23 degrees which was normal for the month. The fog coverage data (hours) at IGIA, Palam showed that it was the clearest month in the last 22 years in terms of visibility. Fog hours (shallow to very dense) during the month were only 145 against normal of 300 hours. Dense fog conditions were also subdued with just two nights of 9 hours against normal of 9 nights and of 45 hours, the IMD said.
