Madhuri Dixit

Prime Video on Thursday announced that Madhuri Dixit-Nene will star in the Amazon Original movie "Maja Maa". The film will be directed by Anand Tiwari and produced by Amritpal Singh Bindra, both of whom previously collaborated with the streamer on the 2020 series "Bandish Bandits". "Maja Maa" also stars "Bandish Bandits" stars Ritwik Bhowmik and Sheeba Chaddha, along with Barkha Singh, Srishti Shrivastava, Rajit Kapur and Simone Singh. Madhuri said working on the film was a great learning experience. "Every movie or show that I work on has been a learning experience. Everyone in the cast is so talented they brought their own charm, craft and enthusiasm and it was very contagious. "Everyday I learnt something. The journey has been fantastic. It is Karan (Johar), who told me about this film," the Bollywood star said at the Prime Video Presents India event here. According to the streamer, "Maja Maa" is a warm, funny story set in Vadodara about a loving mother who unwittingly becomes a hurdle in her son's marriage plans and contests societal norms.

Maja Ma Review: Promises More Than It Delivers, Madhuri Dixit's Magentic Presence Notwithstanding

A multi-tasking middle class matron runs into unforeseen hurdles when her only son decides to marry a Punjabi girl from NYC and the would-be-bride's hoity-toity, ultra-conservative parents land up in Gujarat to size up the boy's unassuming family. Maja Ma, helmed by Anand Tiwari, dives into the resultant kerfuffle but fails to go deep enough to be able to produce a genuinely vibrant portrait of a clash of cultures. The well-intentioned but superficial film promises much more than it delivers. It barely keeps up with the complex issues at play as the simple-minded, spirited protagonist tackles her tribulations. Madhuri Dixit, who plays the pivotal role of a wife and mother who thinks nothing of letting the well-being of her family always take precedence over her own, is let down by a middling script that has the feel of a radical departure from regular family drama norms to begin with but finally settles for a safe, convenient course on its choppy way to an outright copout of a climax. As a consequence, an unpredictable twist or two apart, Maja Ma delivers no big, memorable thematic takeaways. It ties itself up in knots as it tracks the actions of an initially defensive but eventually defiant woman forced to rethink her personal priorities all of three decades into a marriage bereft of any spark. Amazon Prime Video's first Indian original movie, Maja Ma centres on Pallavi Patel, her docile husband Manohar (Gajraj Rao) and her two grown-up children, who take divergent stands...

Gajraj Rao has been acting for years. But his breakout performance came through Badhaai Ho. After sharing the screen space with Neena Gupta in that film, the actor and ad filmmaker is gearing up to star opposite Madhuri Dixit in the upcoming Amazon Original film Maja Maa. Excerpts from his interaction with the media during the promotions of the series. Gajraj Rao: My heart skipped a beat. It was like a dream come true to play a significant role opposite the legend of Madhuri Dixit. The shoot was being planned during Covid. I was scared and didn’t know whether I would be able to go for the shoot or not. But working with her is so important so I said, ‘ Bhaad mein jaaye Covid. Jokes apart, we took all the precautions while shooting. Amazon Prime Video had their safety protocols. Gajraj Rao: It was life-altering. It was like I was writing for a local newspaper/magazine and suddenly one day I got my article printed in Time magazine or The New York Times. People’s perspective towards you changes. Earlier I didn’t have any complaints. I had some acting work and I had my ad films work. But the warmth and respect that I have been getting from the makers after Badhaai Ho is unprecedented. Gajraj Rao: Amit Sharma, the director of Badhaai Ho, and I used to assist Pradeep Sarkar long back. I had done one TVF sketch with Ayushmann Khurrana. We had fun working with each other and had some understanding. So, he also recommended my name. Amit’s wife Aliya Sen also recommended that Gajraj ...
