Shri Mahakal Lok: Reclaiming India's Sacred Spaces One Corridor At A Time

A few hours before the lokarpanof the massive space surrounding the temple of the Lord of Time himself, now named ‘Mahakal Lok’, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan traced the journey of the project as he addressed a group of people in the city. In 2016, when the Simhasth Kumbh took place, which is said to have seen over 75 million people in attendance for a dip or snan in the Kshipra river, is when the idea of crafting the Mahakal corridor was born. And in time for 2028, Simhasth aims to transform the entire space around the two key points of the snan - the temple and the river bank. The project was an outcome of the Vichar Mahakumbh, a confluence of various religious heads, thinkers, opinion makers and leaders which came out with a 51-point manifesto, that contained guidelines and action to be taken to ensure a better world for our coming generations. One of which was the need for activities that foster spiritual, religious, and cultural revival. “So in 2017, we decided that, given that crores of people come to Ujjain for the darshan of Mahakal, we could work to acquaint them with the tales of Mahakal maharaj and Shivaleela episodes could be created in the extended premise of the temple,” he adds. Six out of the seven idols of 'Saptarishis' installed at the Mahakal Lok corridor, developed on the premises of Mahakaleshwar temple in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain, collapsed and suffered damages due to gusty winds on Sunday, but nobody was injured in the incident despite the presence of a large number of visitors, officials said. State Congress chief Kamal Nath said in a tweet, "I demand from the chief minister that the idols be restored immediately. The sub-standard construction should be probed and the people involved in it should be punished." His predecessor Arun Yadav told PTI over phone, "The BJP government is not even sparing Gods and today's development at the Mahakal Lok corridor smacks of corruption." Talking about the local weather conditions, India Meteorological Department's Bhopal centre Duty Officer J P Vishwakarma told PTI that the forecast for Sunday said gusty winds would blow at the speed of 40 to 50 kilometer per hour (KMPH) at isolated places in Ujjain during the day. Talking over the phone, he also said, "We don't have an Automatic Weather Station in Ujjain to measure the speed of the wind in Ujjain. We are going to demand it." The corridor, said to be one of the longest in the country, traverses the old Rudrasagar lake which has been revived as part of the redevelopment project around the Mahakaleshwar temple, one of the 12 'jyotirlingas' in the country.
