Kolkata remains chilly, minimum temperature may plunge below 12°C

By India Today Web Desk: With the northwesterly winds carrying in the chill from the Himalayas gaining strength in Kolkata, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the mercury level may slide below 12 degrees Celsius. On Sunday, the city recorded a minimum temperature up to 15.1 degrees Celsius and it remained chilly on a windy day. The weather became chilly with stronger winds as the minimum temperature went up from 13.5 degrees Celsius on Saturday. The weathermen said that it is likely to remain cool in Kolkata till December 22, following which the minimum temperature may rise marginally. Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) director GK Das was quoted by the Times of India (TOI) as saying that Kolkata may get colder on Monday and Tuesday because the northwesterly winds have become stronger. Das said that the temperature would slide below 12 degrees Celsius and is expected to settle between 11 degrees Celsius and 12 degrees Celsius, respectively, on Monday. According to reports, the weather may remain chilly till Wednesday and after that the northwesterly winds will become weak, leading to a marginal rise in temperature. Minimum temperature to remain stable in Kolkata till cloud cover recedes: MeT

By India Today Web Desk: Days after Kolkata was drenched by overnight rains under the influence of cyclone Jawad, the city remained cloudy on Wednesday. The city had a cloudy day due to a low pressure trough across the south to north Bay of Bengal. The weather system had been generating clouds that will continue to hover over the city for the next two days, the MeT office said. The MeT officials were quoted by the Times of India (TOI) as saying that the unseasonal clouds have delayed a temperature drop in the city. The minimum temperature is expected to dip to 15 degrees Celsius by December 13-14. "The minimum temperature in the city has been hovering around 19 to 20 degrees Celsius in the aftermath of cyclone Jawad. No change in temperature is expected till the cloud cover recedes, which will pave the path for the chilly northwesterly to flow in. The temperature may drop by the end of the week," Regional Meteorological Centre director G K Das was quoted by TOI as saying. Das added that the cold winds that triggered snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir will travel across Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and then reach Bengal. As per the report, the gap between the minimum and maximum temperatures would widen. ALSO READ|
