Karnataka Election 2023 Results: CLP meeting today to elect new CM; check details

A day after Congress registered a thumping victory in Karnataka, the only south Indian state that had BJP in power, the party will hold its crucial Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting on Sunday (May 14). AICC general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala said the meeting will be held at 5.30 pm on Sunday and all MLAs will take part in it. The Congress already instructed the new members to arrive in Bengaluru on Saturday itself. The Congress has gained an absolute majority in the state winning as many as 136 seats. However, all eyes will be on who is the new chief minister. The leading contenders for the top post are former chief minister and Kuruba strongman Siddaramaiah (75) and KPCC chief and Vokkaliga strongman DK Shivakumar (60). While Siddaramaiah is a mass leader who holds sway over the 'Ahinda' (minorities, backward classes and Dalits) vote bank of the Congress, Shivakumar the go-to man of the Gandhi family, who has bailed out his party at times of crises (shielding the Congress MLAs from being "poached" thrice) and has strived to strengthen the party at the grassroots ever since his elevation as the party chief in July 2020. Meanwhile, supporters of Siddaramaiah put up a poster outside Siddaramaiah's residence in Bengaluru, referring to him as "the next CM of Karnataka." Meanwhile, it is reportedly said that the party is likely to vote and elect the new chief minister as it did in Himachal Pradesh. All MLAs will reportedly be asked to vote for their choice of the ...

Karnataka Election Result 2023: Time, date and where to track assembly poll result

The results of Karnataka saw a voter turnout of 73 per cent, the highest in three decades, where the ruling BJP, a combative Congress and the JD(S) are locked in a three-cornered contest. In the 2018 elections, the Congress garnered a vote-share of 38.04 per cent, followed by the BJP (36.22 per cent) and the JD(S) (18.36 per cent). Most of the exit polls predict a fractured mandate. The poll of polls shows an advantage for the Congress with the party poised to win 109 seats, BJP 91 seats and JD-S 23. If Karnataka throws up a hung assembly, the JD-S could emerge as the kingmaker. The 2018 Karnataka polls had also thrown a fractured mandate. The BJP had then emerged as the single largest party by winning 104 seats, followed by Congress with 80 seats and JD(S) 37. With no party getting a clear majority in the 2018 polls, BS Yediyurappa of the BJP, which was the single largest party, staked claim and formed the government. However, the saffron party strongman was unable to muster the required numbers and the government was dissolved within three days, ahead of a trust vote. Later, the Congress-JD(S) alliance formed the government with Kumaraswamy as CM, but coalition government collapsed in 14 months, triggered by the resignation of 17 ruling coalition legislators and their subsequent defection to the BJP. In the bypolls held subsequently in 2019, the ruling party won 12 out of 15 seats. In the outgoing Assembly, the ruling BJP has 116 MLAs, followed by the Congress 69, JD(S) ...
