Modern Love Chennai Season 1 Review: Bharathiraja and Thiagarajan Kumararaja hold this otherwise average anthology on love and relationship

Modern Love Chennai Season 1 Synopsis: An anthology of six episodes that explores love and relationships in today's world. Modern Love Chennai Season 1 Review: Modern Love Chennai is an anthology that traverses between several love stories that deal with different moods, aesthetics, sensibilities, and more. While every episode is visually appealing, only a very few lives that we get to witness manage to grab our interest, by letting us connect. No doubt that all six directors have come up with an interesting premise, but the way it progresses and takes us more into the core is when things become problematic. They all talk about love in different shades, but most of it is very vague, except for the one that talks about the complexities involved in love after marriage. Titled Modern Love Chennai, the city, and the characters stand apart rather than merging seamlessly. One could sell off these stories based on any city and the dialect of that particular region. The episode, directed by Akshay Sundher, titled Margazhi, takes us into the story of a delicate adolescent love that evolves from a tragic loss. The central character, Jasmine (Sanjula Sarathi), is shattered after the separation of her parents, before which she used to be a cheerful girl. Set against the backdrop of a church, a new breeze of hope comes in the form of a teenager (Chu Khoy Sheng) who is about to stay there only for a short period of time. Though she begins to understand that he's about to leave the place...

‘Modern Love: Chennai’ review: Thiagarajan Kumararaja’s anthology is a phenomenal assortment of captivating love stories

‘Modern Love: Chennai’ review: Thiagarajan Kumararaja’s anthology is a phenomenal assortment of captivating love stories Directors Bharathiraja, Balaji Sakthivel, Thiagarajan Kumararaja, Rajumurugan, Krishnakumar Ramakumar and Akshay Sunder — along with an impressive cast — deliver six meticulously-crafted stories that leave you with many lingering thoughts May 18, 2023 04:51 pm | Updated 06:08 pm IST An anthology like Modern Love: Chennai is rare. Every segment of this anthology works wonders and it does so with refreshing writing and treatment at a time when love stories are seen as a done-and-dusted genre that no longer surprises the viewers. Thiagarajan Kumararaja’s anthology, based on a collection of real essays that appeared in The New York Times, has shorts that make you wonder what was real or what was fictionalised, as well as those in which you wish the events were true. The bizarreness of what transpires in Rajumurugan’s Lalagunda Bommaigal is the former — you wonder if something similar really transpired — you chuckle for a bit and feel bad for the characters at times, but you also know that this is as real as it can get. Lalagunda begins as a love story between two souls, one hesitating to open up again and the other fighting to be accepted. Left broken on the hospital bed after an abortion, Shoba (Sri Gouri Priya) hopelessly shuts off the world around her; eventually, after many ‘fateful’ events, she falls in love with Nathuram, a panipuri seller. Unexpected ...

Modern Love Chennai review: A fantastic sixer!

ALSO READ | There is of course the witty humour of Thiagarajan even in the films that are not directed by him. Like how the protagonist of Margazhi, Jazmine (Sanjula Sarathi), the daughter of a devout Christian, finds love in a church. In the end, her dad tells the priest that he could see that his daughter is happy since she started coming to the church. “It’s all because of the Lord’s mercy,” says the priest. But we know it’s all due to Jazmine’s winter romance. Perhaps, Margazhi, directed by Akshay Sundar comes across as the most straightforward movie of the lot; it is also the shortest. Yet, a lot is going on in the film. Jazmine’s father is recently divorced and her mother doesn’t even want to be in touch with her daughter. The brief romance she stumbles upon at the church finally gives her what she wants: to be seen. That’s why the end is not devastating but bittersweet. There’s another story of a divorce that doesn’t lead to a broken family, and it is directed by the iconic filmmaker Bharathiraja, a strong influence in creating the conventional idea of romance in the mainstream. His film, Paravai Kootil Vaazhum Maangal (Deers that live in a bird’s nest) is about a wife’s meeting with husband’s new lover to discuss how they are going to swap their worlds. Talk about subversion! With Remaya Nambeesan’s brilliant performance and Iliayaaraja’s old songs, Bharathiraja has effortlessly pulled off a radical story. Revathy (Remya), who is accepting of her husband’s decision...
