Moeen Ali: England all

He won the 50-over World Cup in 2019 and is in England's preliminary squad for this year's T20 World Cup. "I want to play for as long as I can and I just want to enjoy my cricket," Moeen said. "I've enjoyed Test cricket but that intensity can be too much sometimes and I feel like I've done enough of it and I'm happy and content with how I've done." Moeen added that Test cricket was "better than any other format by far" and "more rewarding" when he was playing well. The left-handed batter and off-spinner hit five centuries and took five five-wicket hauls in Tests, finishing with a batting average of 28.29 and a bowling average of 36.66. Only 15 bowlers have taken more Test wickets for England and Moeen is ranked third among English spinners, behind Derek Underwood (297) and Graeme Swann (255). In 2017, Moeen became the fifth-fastest player in terms of matches played to reach 2,000 runs and 100 wickets, also taking a hat-trick against South Africa that year to seal a series win at The Oval. He was part of the 2015 Ashes winning side but struggled during the 2017-18 series in Australia and took a break from cricket after being dropped during the 2019 Ashes at home. Moeen was not recalled to the Test team until the tour of Sri Lanka in January this year, but missed the two Tests after contracting coronavirus and spent 14 days in isolation. He finally made his return in the second Test in India in February, taking eight wickets, before travelling home as part of England's rotat...

Moeen Ali proud to lead England in Pakistan as T20 World Cup looms

M oeen Ali has been waiting for this tour. He has been dreaming about it since he felt he had earned his place in the England team. But he never imagined he would be captain when it finally happened. “It’s a great honour regardless of who it’s against,” Moeen says, “but to do it in Pakistan when the team are coming back here, that’s amazing for me personally, especially when I have family who migrated from here back in the day.” His grandfather moved to England from Kashmir after the second world war and his mother was born here. He spent time playing here as a child and again, more recently, in the Pakistan Super League. Read more “I’m somebody that wants to play cricket in every nation,” Moeen says, “and Pakistan especially, after so long.” It has been 17 years since England were last here. His decision to play in the PSL in 2020 was, he says, because he wanted to help play his part in “putting Pakistan cricket back on the map”. He sees this tour as an extension of that. “I wanted to be part of this. It’s a big thing when England come to Pakistan, more than any other country, England’s the one that the Pakistan fans really love to see coming here.” His phone has not stopped ringing since he arrived. He has an uncle who lives here and plenty of friends too. “I’ve had so many messages”– most of them asking if he can help dig up tickets – “that it’s a bit of a killer for me.” But he is happy to have the distraction. He is obviously frustrated with the tight security for the...

Moeen Ali swaps holiday in Cotswolds for another Ashes adventure

M oeen Ali intends to “go with the flow” in the upcoming Ashes series and given the week just gone, the enormity of the challenge to come, and the team he has rejoined, it seems a fittingly decent outlook. A week last Sunday, eyeing up a summer in the Blast, the Hundred and a family holiday in the Cotswolds, Moeen received a text from Ben Stokes that simply read: “Ashes?” Unaware that Jack Leach was out of the series with a lower-back stress fracture, this was met with a typical Moeen reply of “LOL”. Read more Moeen thought Stokes was “taking the mick” but over the next two days, after talks with the Test captain and Rob Key at the PCA golf day, caution from his wife, Firuza, and even the prime minister calling for his return, he said “yes”. Two years out of first-class cricket? Not a problem. Moeen has been lured by England’s new approach and an Ashes series that is shaping up to be a cracker. His first day back at training was pretty eventful. Rocking up in all black civvies and exchanging pleasantries with the stewards, Moeen was soon into those unfamiliar whites for some official headshots. Five minutes later he and everybody – players, coaches, staff and media – were turfed out on the busy Edgbaston Road due to a fire alarm, the shoppers outside Aldi blinking double-takes in bright sunshine. And on Wednesday he will head to Windsor with Firuza, his father, Munir, and his mother, Maqsood, to be presented with an OBE. Two days out from an Ashes series, this swerve from ...

Moeen Ali says 'Wife wasn't that keen' for Ashes Return

"it was just my wife wasn't that keen" Moeen Ali has revealed that his wife was not all that keen on his Ashes return. The cricketer has come out of Test retirement to play in the upcoming Ashes series, which gets underway on June 16, 2023. Ali had received a text from captain Ben Stokes that simply read: “Ashes?” Unaware that Jack Leach was out of the series with a lower-back stress fracture, this was met with the reply: “LOL.” Ali thought Stokes was “taking the mick” but two days later, he said yes. He explained that over those two days, he had talks with Ben Stokes and Rob Key at the PCA golf day. Although many called for his return, Ali admitted that his wife Firuza “wasn’t that keen”. Explaining that he had a trip to the Cotswolds booked before Ben Stokes texted him, Moeen Ali said: “I did have some family holidays booked, that was the only reason. “But there weren’t that many, it was just my wife wasn’t that keen but everybody else around me was.” On June 14, 2023, he will travel to Windsor with Firuza, his father and his mother to be presented with an OBE, an honour endorsed by England Head Coach Brendon McCullum. Speaking about the honour, Moeen Ali said: “Mum and Dad love it. I’ve bought a three-piece suit. It’s going to be boiling.” This dash to collect an honour for “services to cricket” is a useful reminder of a career that was forged in nearby Sparkhill, comes full circle this week and could have been deemed fulfilled. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak even called fo...

It's such a big series and the guys have been playing exciting cricket," said Moeen. A stress fracture in Leach's back was revealed after England's comprehensive win against Ireland at Lord's earlier this month. Off-spinner Moeen, who retired from Test cricket in September 2021, was contacted by Stokes before he heard about Leach's injury. "Stokesy messaged me with a question mark - 'Ashes?'," said Moeen. "I just said 'LOL', thinking he was taking the mick. "The news came through and I had a chat with him. That was it." Moeen and Stokes were team-mates with Chennai Super Kings at the Indian Premier League in April and May. Ben Stokes describes Ashes team-mates in one word "I've obviously spent a lot of time with Stokesy during the IPL," said Warwickshire's Moeen.
