Mohammed Sami

Mohammed Sami’s poignant and evocative paintings are an exploration of memory, and its vulnerability to time. Absent of people, the settings and quotidian objects in his works are nevertheless permeated with the trace of human presence; while evidence of turmoil or trauma is never directly referenced, obscure and haunting narratives are conveyed. Sami mines personal experiences from his formative years in Iraq to ground his work, but by embracing ambiguity, he creates a sense of universal familiarity. Negotiating the past through painting, he harnesses the metaphorical potential of different mark-making techniques to interrupt a straightforward narrative reading. Blurred objects often appear as if they are coming apart or moving across the canvas itself, suggesting gaps or slippage of memory. Sami’s compositions unfurl as cryptic vignettes of fragmented scenes, excavated from the past. Sami was born in Baghdad, Iraq in 1984, and he currently lives and works in London, UK. He studied drawing and painting at the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad, graduating in 2004-05. Subsequently, he worked at the Ministry of Culture in Baghdad, before being granted asylum in Sweden in 2007, where he lived for almost a decade. In 2015, Sami left his adopted country to pursue a degree at Ulster University-Belfast School of Art, Northern Ireland, which was followed by a Masters in Fine Arts at Goldsmiths College, London, completed in 2018. His work has been featured in numerous group exhibitio...

C., was on the brief, for appellant. E. Anne McKinsey, Asst. U. S. Atty., Washington, D. C., with whom Earl J. Silbert, Before McGOWAN, LEVENTHAL Opinion for the Court filed by Circuit Judge WALD. WALD, Circuit Judge: This case is a tragedy of errors. It represents an extension of and embroils the United States Government and its officials in what a Maryland appellate court has called "an almost incredible history of marital warfare, with skirmishes occurring up and down the eastern seaboard of this country, as well as abroad." Sami v. Mohammad Sami: Pakistan pacer who was extremely quick and equally erratic

Mohammad Sami, born on February 24, 1981, is a Pakistan fast bowler. He has a hat-trick in Tests and ODIs as well as the feat of bowling the longest over in international cricket. It’s enough to indicate the two extremes of Sami’s career. Abhijit Banare looks back at the highlights of the Pakistani speedster’s cricketing journey marked with surprising comebacks. Sami made a sensational Test debut on tour of New Zealand. He picked three wickets in the first innings and bettered it with a five-for in the second innings to script a memorable 299-run win for Pakistan. Sami’s career was off to a flier. Mark Richardson was Sami’s first international wicket. His One-Day International (ODI) debut was against Sri Lanka at Sharjah in April 2001, a month after his Test debut. Sami’s career-best bowling in ODIs came against New Zealand in December 2003 when he ripped through the last five of the New Zealand batting. Such was Sami’s pace that four of the five batsmen saw their stumps disturbed (Jacob Oram, Brendon McCullum, Tama Cunning and Paul Hithchock). Sami picked five in a space of just two runs to finish with 7.5-2-10-5. It was the only five-for of Sami’s career in ODIs. In the 36 Tests though, Sami couldn’t better his debut performance. Sami had a fluent run-up and a smooth bowling action with his left-arm pointing towards the sky and wrists slightly slanting at the point of release. He generated enormous pace and had the ability to consistently pitch it up. His love for bowlin...

Saddam Hussein mural painter creates a world of turmoil

I thought I saw figures in black crossing the squares of the city and standing on its flat rooftops, the sort of figures painters casually sketch in to give a scene a sense of life and scale. But there was actually no one there, just black and white flecks floating down on the clusters of buildings under a dark sky. Ashfall, by Iraqi-born painter Mohammad Sami, is an unpeopled and silent aftermath. Clogged, compressed, scraped down, sprayed, loosely brushed: the surfaces of Sami’s paintings have been through a lot. They evidence turmoil, however quiet the images they describe appear. This is deceptive. Sami’s paintings are filled with doubts and ambiguities. You can’t always be sure what you’re looking at and the paintings often say one thing, their titles another. A gilded, upholstered throne is called Electric Chair, and a huge painting of what appear to be piles of shirts (are they collars of military shirts?) is titled Study of Guts. In The Parliament Room, rows of unoccupied chairs recede into darkness. They look like headstones. Saddam’s face is never clear. There’s the uniform, the bulging shirt, the military belt, but the face remains indistinct Trained as a painter in Saddam Hussein’s Baghdad, Sami was set to work on murals and portraits of the leader, to be hung in offices, public buildings and homes. When you see his recent versions of these portraits, decorating Sami’s painted interiors, Saddam’s face is never clear. There’s the uniform, the bulging shirt, the ...
