Standing at over 5,164 meters tall at Gorakshep, the highest human settlement and the stop prior to Everest Base Camp (EBC), overlooking the Himalayan Mountain ranges and the ultimate summit, I was absolutely in awe. The rich history and adversity associated with ascending this iconic mountain only add to its allure. Summiting Everest becomes a surmountable challenge to a few and only a deep sense of reverence to many. Yet one can never truly know if they are prepared for such an endeavour or if they will ever be. The first attempts to climb Everest date back to the 1920s and were undertaken by British mountaineers such as the renowned George Mallory, who led three expeditions to the summit. He never succeeded but his determination persisted even after facing high winds and a deadly avalanche that killed several porters. He returned after the first two endeavours and shared his experiences of tackling the seemingly insurmountable and the potential path to the summit. Yet beyond all the expedition hardships depicted, a journalist is said to have asked him, ‘Why climb Mount Everest?’ ‘Because it’s there’, Mallory replied. These three simple words immortalised Mallory as perhaps one of the most celebrated mountaineers of all time and epitomised the humanity’s desire to conquer the universe. The peak of Mount Everest has three somewhat flat sides; it is said to be shaped like a three-sided pyramid. Glaciers and ice cover the sides of the mountain. In July, temperatures can get as high as nearly zero degrees Fahrenheit (about -18 degrees Celsius). In January, temperatures drop to as low as -76 degrees F (-60 degrees C). Indian surveyor Radhanath Sikdar, part of the British-led Survey of India, determined in 1852 that Mount Everest was the tallest mountain in the world and established an initial elevation of 29,000 feet. The mountain was known as Peak XV by the British until 1865 when it was named after Sir George Everest, who served as the Surveyor General of India from 1830 to 1843. Unfortunately, due to the hazards and rigors of climbing such a dangerous mountain, over 200 have died attempting to climb—making the death rate for Mount Everest climbers about 1 in 10. The highest point on Earth is Mount Everest. Everest is one of the Mount Everest rises to a height of more than 29,000 feet (8,840 meters). • • • • • With an area of 147,516 sq. km, Nepal is a small nation in South Asia. Despite its size, however, Nepal is extensively diverse in terms of topography as observed on the physical map of the country above. Mountains and rugged hills cover almost 75% of Nepal's land area. The elevation of land here rises from as low as only 59 m (194 ft) in the Tarai region to the snow-lined peaks in the north where 90 peaks are over 7,000 m (22,966 ft) in elevation. The Tarai Region (in the south) along the border with India, is a low stretch of land, containing Nepal's lowest point: Kanchan Kalan at 229 ft. (70 m).
