‘She

She-Hulk Disney This is one of those things I just knew was going to happen because you could see it coming from a mile away. She-Hulk attracted controversy ahead of release for its digital effects in trailers, but past that, happens to be an MCU show directed by, written by, produced by and starring women. And as such, it’s being review bombed with a flurry of one-star reviews here on launch day, almost identically to what happened with Ms. Marvel, and what has not happened to the same extent with other MCU series. Yes, more than a third of all reviews for She-Hulk are 1 star, which makes its current IMDB score 5.4 out of 10, the lowest of all the MCU series. Ms. Marvel is still at a 6.2 with 19.9% 1 star reviews, so it’s not like IMDB every really goes and tries to sort through these kinds of bombing campaigns. And as I posted last time, here’s what this curve looks like for a “just okay” series like Falcon and the Winter Soldier that no one is bombing: Falcon and the Winter Soldier IMDB On great (it’s the lowest among MCU shows at the moment), but it’s not as intensive of a bombing run as what’s being shown on IMDB. All anyone has is their opinion, of course, but there’s a difference between a show or movie reviewing worse than average, and a literal flood of one star reviews that are incredibly disproportionate compared to every other show except for Ms. Marvel. After having watched the first episode this morning, I’d say the complaints about CG are mostly moot now, as...

Why ‘Ms. Marvel’ Viewership Is Reportedly Much Lower Than Other MCU Series

While the report cites higher viewership among Gen Z and Black, Hispanic and Asian households, it’s still quite a ways off from the others, why? It certainly isn’t because the show isn’t good. However… Ms. Marvel is a brand new hero – Almost all these other shows were based on existing, high profile characters in the MCU and their attached stars, Wanda, Vision, Sam, Bucky, Loki and Clint. Ms. Marvel has no supporting backup like Captain Marvel herself (not yet, anyway). It’s very clearly aimed at a younger crowd – It’s the first PG-rated Marvel series and definitely draws a lot of parallels with YA series. You may get some measure of existing Marvel fans believing this one isn’t “for them,” which is unfortunate, given that it’s enjoyable regardless of what generation you’re from. Disney is pairing it with Obi-Wan – None of the other MCU series were layered directly on top of a high profile Star Wars show like this, and for whatever reason, Disney insists on putting both of them out the same day, which could be hurting its viewership. The marketing was not great – All the pre-release trailers I saw didn’t do a great job of packaging the series, if you ask me. While I was planning to watch it, the trailers didn’t really assure me of its potential quality, and it wasn’t until the reviews starting rolling in that I thought maybe it had captured lightning in a bottle. She’s a Pakistani-Canadian Muslim - While I’ve brought up the racism behind the review bombing of Ms. Marvel on...

Ms. Marvel Episode 5 Review

One of Ms. Marvel’s strengths during this first season has been its emphasis on Kamala’s family and community in New Jersey and Karachi. “Time and Again” sees Kamala literally grapple with the past while facing the challenges of her community in the present. It is an emotional penultimate installment that reveals the truth behind a mythic family story while refusing to brush over the pain of the Partition. But while there are some significant developments, certain aspects feel rushed, and the shorter runtime is noticeable. In opposition to Stranger Things’ recent bumper-length season four finale, episode five of Ms. Marvel clocks in at under 35 minutes. Where previously Kamala’s adventures have consistently delivered well-paced episodes that don’t overstay their welcome, the way the story bounces across the timeline in this week’s short chapter can’t help but give off fractured and uneven results. The story simply does not have enough space to unfold. There are a lot of good moments, which build on everything that has come before it, but the abrupt conclusion to the fight that began in “ Play Unconditional love is a central theme here, so while Najma’s unpleasant death is rushed, it does at least tie back to the message threaded throughout about the importance of family. Yes, she left Kamran behind in the US after his perceived betrayal, but ultimately, this bond is more potent than her desire to follow through with the plan. Again, the sudden about-turn to sacrifice herse...
