John McLaughlin Marks Shakti 50th Anniversary With Album And Tour

World fusion pioneers John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain mark 2023 return with Shakti 50 th anniversary album and world tour. An unprecedented, transcontinental collaboration, Shakti united eastern and western musicians, and in the process forged the template for what is now called “world music.” Their dynamic musical hybrid immediately enthralled audiences around the globe – and inspired generations of musicians, artists, and thinkers from all walks of life to embark on their own cross-cultural odysseys. From the West came British virtuoso guitarist John McLaughlin, who arrived in New York in 1969 and immediately re-wired jazz via his work with Miles Davis and the Tony Williams Lifetime, of which he was a founding member. From the East came visionary tabla player Zakir Hussain, who had been performing with giants of Hindustani music since he was a child, as the son of Ustad Alla Rakha – one of tabla’s greatest exponents, often seen accompanying sitar pioneer Ravi Shankar. A music shop owner in Greenwich Village connected the two, with Hussain giving McLaughlin lessons in Indian music that, over time, blossomed into jam sessions that started the pair on the path to what eventually became Shakti. “There wasn’t a first meeting,” Hussain recalls today. “It felt like a reunion of long-lost brothers…” By 1973, McLaughlin’s pioneering jazz/rock fusion ensemble Mahavishnu Orchestra had achieved Olympian popularity and acclaim…and yet, something else was calling out to McLaughlin –...

World Fusion Pioneers John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain mark 2023 return with Shakti 50th anniversary album and world tour

John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain announce Shakti An unprecedented, transcontinental collaboration, Shakti united eastern and western musicians, and in the process forged the template for what is now called “world music.” From the West came virtuoso British guitarist John McLaughlin, who re-wired jazz via his work with Miles Davis and the Tony Williams Lifetime. From the East came visionary tabla player Zakir Hussain, who had accompanied legendary Hindustani musicians from adolescence. A music shop owner in New York City’s Greenwich Village connected the two in 1969, sowing the seeds of what was to become Shakti. “There wasn’t a first meeting,” Hussain recalls today. “It felt like a reunion of long-lost brothers…” In 1973, McLaughlin stunned the music industry by walking away from the Olympian popularity and acclaim of his pioneering jazz/rock ensemble, the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Something else was calling out to him – a music that reflected his evolving spiritual practice while feeding his insatiable hunger to converse, communicate, and explore. With Hussain, violinist Shankar, and ghatam player T.H. “Vikku” Vinayakram, McLaughlin founded Shakti. “For me,” McLaughlin reflects, “it was an imperative that Shakti become my permanent group after the Mahavishnu Orchestra.” Together they honed an ecstatic new fusion, blazing uncharted pathways and demonstrating the potential of such global composites to generations of musicians around the world. Now McLaughlin and Hussain are pr...

GLOBAL FUSION ALCHEMISTS SHAKTI ANNOUNCE NORTH AMERICAN TOUR

Co-Founders John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain Lead Current Lineup On First U.S. Tour In 16 Years With Special Guests Béla Fleck, Bill Frisell and others on select shows More dates and special guests to be announced at a later date. Feb 6, 2023: Following word of the Summer 2023 release of This Moment – their first new studio album in 46 years – revolutionary world music ensemble Shakti will continue to discover and explore the musical common ground bridging East and West on an extensive U.S. tour, beginning August 17 in Boston. Born in the mid-1970s out of the deep artistic and spiritual connection bonding British guitarist John McLaughlin and Indian tabla player Zakir Hussain, Shakti’s cross-cultural musical conversation dissolved boundaries with uncommon passion, grace, and dexterity – awakening subsequent generations of musicians to the possibilities of such hybrids in the process. Alongside McLaughlin and Hussain, today’s Shakti features renowned vocalist Shankar Mahadevan, violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan, and percussionist Selvaganesh Vinayakram (son of original Shakti ghatam player T.H. “Vikku” Vinayakram). Looking ahead to the performances, McLaughlin equates the endeavor to a homecoming of sorts. “Shakti was born in the USA in 1973,” he reflects, “and is also no stranger to American audiences. We’ve played concerts all over the US from coast to coast and north to south – and everywhere we’ve played, we’ve had wonderful audiences.” Joining Shakti on more than half of t...

Reading the Samhita of Shiva and some other recommendations of the Swami Sivananda Saraswaati, I came across the term vayu siddhi. The English translation roughly explains what it is but I wish to better understand what it is, if is it necessary to attain this siddhi in order to get Moksha? and more generically in which way are the siddhis relevant in the reaching of the Moksha? The below linked and copied pasted set of Q&A about one answers about Devas Koshas may partially give a hint to answer my still unanswered question. I give you the formula of the synthesis before you read one part of the thesis contained into that answer, that is: Vayu Siddhi is that capacity of the physical body to leave the ground, while in deep sadhana- samadhi. Therefore the human body can win gravity. Then why it is important to acquire such a capacity [according to Yog Shiva Samhita in particular]? Note: Sri Swami Sivananda Saraswati does not state that this is important, and discourage the practitioners to get enchanted with the 8 major Siddhis which are told to be "happenings", whilst the edition of Yog Shiva Samhita in my hands state that this Siddhi is important. While the samadhi process is mature enough, just before the Moksha arrives, the body must have learned to win the gravity as this is a correspondence to the jiva that have overcome tatmatras and indryias. Only in this way, in fact, the jiva is mature enough to leave the subjugative effects of the Maya and reach the Ultimate Reali...
