Watch Video: NJ Freeze Act protects taxpayers after a property tax appeal BRICK- Taxes for municipal services—money that funds Brickpolice, first aid, parks and garbage collection, among other expenses— will increase by about $48this year for the median homeowner, according to Mayor John G. Ducey On Tuesday, the Township Council met and approved a more than $111.2 million municipal budget, up nearly $1.4 million, or 1.2% from the previous year. Ducey said last month that increases in employee pension contributions, police salaries, bond repayments, insurance costs andmaterial pricescould have added more than $3 million in additional costs to the budget. Instead, Ducey said townshipdepartment heads "look(ed) for opportunities to stabilize or reduce costs." Officials also plan to use nearly $10 million inrevenue surplus to offset the budget increase, he said. As a result, municipal taxes will rise 1.9 cents, to 76.6 cents foreach $100 of assessed property value. The increasewill raise the municipal tax bill about $4 per month, or about $48 annually,on the median assessed home in Brick, worth $251,800, Duceysaid. With the increase, the municipal portion of the tax bill on the median Brick home would be $1,928 for the year. "If we didn't make cuts and didn't use the surplus…our taxes would have gone up… 3.2 cents (per $100 of assessed value)," Duceysaid during Tuesday's meeting of the Township Council. "Luckily, we were at the stage of only having to increase 1.9 cents …Ittake...

States With Local Income Taxes

State income taxes can take a pretty significant bite out of your paycheck. If you live in certain states, you could lose another chunk of your hard-earned cash to your city, county, or school district. Roughly one-third of states allow municipalities, counties, school districts, and special districts to impose additional local income taxes. • About a third of all states allow their counties, municipalities, and other local jurisdictions to impose an income tax. • Tax rates are often lower than at the federal or state levels. • Not all states have a local tax in every jurisdiction. Only five cities in Colorado impose the tax, while Iowa has hundreds of school districts who levy income taxes. • Most jurisdictions tax nonresidents who work there at a lower rate. Kansas doesn’t tax nonresidents at all. Alabama Alabama has four local taxing jurisdictions: three cities and one county. Two cities, Bessemer and Birmingham, levy an income tax of 1%. Gadsden's rate is 2%. Macon County imposes a 1% tax as well. The tax is imposed on both residents and nonresidents who work in these locations. Colorado Five Colorado cities impose an income tax as a flat dollar amount on compensation earned by both residents and nonresidents. It's called an occupational privilege tax and is charged to employees who work within city limits. (Employers also pay the tax, but that amount may be different from the tax owed by the employee.) Maryland All 23 Maryland counties levy income taxes on both reside...
