By Janani K: Nani’s fans have a reason to rejoice. After watching two of his films on OTT platforms, another one of his films, Shyam Singha Roy, hit the theatres ahead of Christmas. Directed by Rahul Sankrityan, Shyam Singha Roy is about reincarnation and love, with elements of action and fantasy. Vasu (Nani) is an aspiring filmmaker who stalks Keerthy (Krithi Shetty) because he wants her to act in his short film. She doesn’t put up with his creepy ways and gives it back. One day, during the shooting of the short film, Vasu gets hit on the back of his head. From then on, he gets flashes of his past life. Shyam Singha Roy (also played by Nani) is a scribe and a social reformer in West Bengal. He falls in love with Maitreyi (Sai Pallavi), a devadasi. Shyam helps Maitreyi come out of the devadasi system and also fights for other causes. Vasu becomes a filmmaker, a successful one at that. However, a publishing company accuses him of plagiarism. Vasu says he hasn’t copied the stories of Shyam Singha Roy. Soon, it becomes a courtroom drama. What connects Vasu and Shyam Singha Roy is the fulcrum of the story. Rahul Sankrityan has an interesting story at hand. While the film is interesting for the most part, it drowns in cliches. Instead of packaging it interestingly, Rahul takes a familiar route that makes the story predictable. The initial set of scenes where Vasu tries to convince Keerthy is creepy.
