National Mathematics Day 2022: Five Facts On Srinivasa Ramanujan

• Srinivasa Ramanujan was born on December 22, 1887, in Tamil Nadu's Erode. He is known for his contributions to the theory of numbers. • Mr Ramanujan studied at Government College in Kumbhakonam in 1903. In college, he failed exams because he was focused too much on mathematics and ignored other subjects. • According to Encyclopaedia Britannica, Mr Ramanujan published the first of his papers in the Journal of the Indian Mathematical Society in 1911. He travelled to England on scholarship in 1914 where he was tutored by and collaborated with British mathematician Godfrey H Hardy. • Mr Ramanujan's mastery of continued fractions was unequaled by any living mathematician, as per Encyclopaedia Britannica. He worked out the Riemann series, the elliptic integrals, hypergeometric series, functional equations of the zeta function using his own technique that came to be called Ramanujan summation. • Ramanujan returned to India in 1919. A year later, he died at the age of 32 in Kumbhakonam.

• Ramanujan used to solve Loney’s Trigonometry exercises at the age of 13, without any help. • He never had any school friends because his peers were intimidated by his mathematical genius. • He failed to get a degree since he could not crack the non-mathematical subjects and would fail in their exams. • He was the second Indian to be honoured with the Fellow of the Royal Society in 1918. The first was Ardaseer Cursetjee, a marine engineer • Ramanujan claimed his whole life that a Hindu Goddess called Namakkal used to give him the questions and theories to prove during his sleep and he would then proceed to solve them when he woke up As a tribute to the great mathematician, our government has decided to declare [Ramanujan’s] birthday, that is December 22, as the National Mathematics Day and the year 2012 as a whole as the National Mathematical Year. India has a long and glorious tradition of mathematics that we need to encourage and nurture. I hope these steps will help in providing the additional impetus to the study of mathematics in our country, apart from making our people more aware of the work of Ramanujan,” stated
