The TN government appointed a three-member team to inquire if there were any legal discrepancies in the surrogacy process undertaken by the power couple. Upon investigations, the team found that the couple registered their marriage on March 11, 2016. The documents were verified and found to be valid. The duo's family physician had recommended surrogacy, following which they consulted the doctors. However, the team has not been able to contact the family doctor as he is currently residing out of India. The report noted that the hospital harvested the oocytes and preserved the embryo, as per ICMR guidelines. The same year in November, a contract was signed with a surrogate. The woman met the age requirement prescribed by the Centre. She was married and had one child fulfilling the legal mandate for surrogacy in India. "While it is now mandatory as per the ART Act to have only relatives as surrogates, the earlier guidelines permitted the couple to hire a woman for the service. There was no violation in the protocol," read the statement released by the TN health government. According to reports, the hospital staff was given the responsibility of looking after the woman during the pregnancy. She underwent a C-section surgery, and the twins - Uyir and Ulagham - met their parents on October 9.
