This temple is dedicated to the destroyer Lord Shiva and is located on Rameshwaram island (Tamil Nadu). This temple has one of the twelve holy jyotirlingas. The temple’s sculptures are of high artistic quality, and they illustrate regional dance rituals or customs. It is situated at the foothills of a jungle type or forested area and amidst agricultural fields, which is close to the shores of the Ramappa Cheruvu. The ancient shrine/idol of Sri Ramanathaswamy temple is believed to be in a humble thatched hut until the 12th century. It was later built as a type of concrete temple by Sethupathy rulers. The significant additions to the temple were made from the 12th to 16th centuries during the various reigns.
