The best movies new to Netflix, HBO Max, Prime Video, and Hulu (April 2023)

Happy April, Polygon readers. It’s fully spring out here, and you know what that means: The temperatures are warming up, the plants are getting greener, and there are a whole lot of great movies new to streaming platforms for you to watch at home. It wouldn’t be spring without us mentioning Spring Breakers, Harmony Korine’s candy cane crime thriller, which is now streaming on HBO Max. But this month also sees the arrival of Spike Lee’s Inside Man and Christopher Nolan’s Inception on Netflix, Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln on Hulu, and a whole slate of erotic thrillers on the Criterion Channel. How to Train Your Dragon and the Shrek movies also make their way to streaming platforms this month, as well as plenty more options for your viewing delight. Let’s get into it! Image: Universal Pictures Year: 2006 Genre: Crime thriller Run time: 2h 9m Director: Spike Lee Cast: Denzel Washington, Clive Owen, Jodie Foster A rare work-for-hire gig for director Spike Lee, 2006’s Inside Man is one of those have-cake-and-eat-it pleasures. It’s a slick, sinuous, puzzle-box thriller in which Clive Owen engineers a bank robbery that is never quite what it seems. Taking hostages, he locks wits with police detective Denzel Washington and high-flying fixer Jodie Foster, and the reversals, twists, and fake-outs topple happily from there. The cast is ludicrously overqualified: Willem Dafoe, Christopher Plummer, and Chiwetel Ejiofor all appear in smaller roles. And Lee doesn’t surrender his playful, ne...

Directed by Bennett Miller and written by Aaron Sorkin and Steven Zaillian, “Moneyball” charts former MLB flameout Billy Beane (Pitt) who’s now general manager of the Oakland Athletics and recruits a statistician with zero baseball experience (played by Jonah Hill in an Oscar-nominated performance) to help him shake up the team. The 25 Best New Movies to Stream in April 2023

The “Bourne” trilogy still stands as one of the most influential franchises of the 21st century, as the gritty and handheld approach to the action in these films would spawn imitators for years to come. Director Doug Liman’s initial entry, “The Bourne Identity,” is a refreshingly grounded international thriller with Matt Damon as an assassin who’s lost his memory and is on the run. Paul Greengrass directed the two sequels – “Supremacy” and “Ultimatum” – which move the series closer to political thriller territory and are arguably all the better for it. – Adam Chitwood “Inside Man” Universal Pictures Netflix – April 1 Spike Lee’s 2006 thriller “Inside Man” is one of the director’s best and most entertaining films. The story opens in the aftermath of a bank heist, with those taken hostage giving their interviews to police about what happened. The film then flashes back to portray the events as they unfold, with Denzel Washington playing the detective trying to talk down the robber and kidnapper (played by Clive Owen) who seems to be harboring some kind of secret. Mind games ensue, and this one keeps you guessing all the way up through the end. – Adam Chitwood “Inception” Warner Bros. Netflix – April 1 If you’re in the mood to watch a mind-bending thriller, you can’t go wrong with Christopher Nolan’s 2010 blockbuster “Inception.” Written and directed by Nolan, the film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a professional thief who is proficient in performing heists within the subconscio...

Rainer Werner Fassbinder, 1982) Live-and-die-hard filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s final howl of anguish from the soul was 1982’s “Querelle,” his last and possibly gayest movie. It’s an adaptation of a novel by French libertine and gay icon Jean Genet, settling into a French port city where a madame played by Jeanne Moreau runs the world, and sailors engage in explicit sex acts that turn violent. Brad Davis, who would die from HIV-related complications three years later, is perfectly cast as the title character, a criminal in love who, much like Genet and Fassbinder, seals his own tragic fate. Now available to stream. Also streaming: -“Paris Is Burning” (now streaming) -“Tongues Untied” (now streaming) -“The Day After Trinity (now streaming) • “Avatar: The Way of Water” (di...
