Why ‘Your Place or Mine’ Filmmaker Aline Brosh McKenna Waited So Long to Direct Her First Movie

If you’ve found yourself cry-laughing at a romantic comedy at some point over the past two decades, chances are that Aline Brosh McKenna was behind it. The screenwriter may be best known for writing the hilariously sharp script for The Devil Wears Prada, but she’s also responsible for much-loved hits like 27 Dresses, Morning Glory, and I Don’t Know How She Does It — not to mention the acclaimed CW show Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, which she also co-created and co-produced alongside star Rachel Bloom. With her latest rom-com, Netflix’s Your Place or Mine, though, McKenna decided to take on a different role than usual: director. Speaking with Shondaland on a recent call, the 55-year-old explains that although she helmed a few episodes of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend over its four-year run, she opted to wait until her kids were grown — and her schedule was freer — to make her feature directorial debut. “I drove a carpool for 15 years. I was the challah co-coordinator for the temple nursery school; I drove a lot of school trips,” McKenna says of why she chose not to try balancing filmmaking simultaneously. “A lot of women can just tuck the baby under their arm and [direct], or do it when they’re pregnant, and if that works for your lifestyle, there are ways to do it,” she adds. “But this, for me, was my path.” It was well worth the wait. Your Place or Mine, streaming on February 10, is a classic rom-com in all the best ways. There are two charming, attractive leads (Reese Witherspoon and Ashto...

Your Place or Mine movie review (2023)

“Your Place or Mine” begins in 2003, and it feels like the kind of superficially agreeable and instantly forgettable romantic comedy that came out around that time. These are the movies that have found new life in heavy rotation on the monitors at DryBar: “ “Your Place or Mine” marks the feature directing debut of longtime writer Trouble is, we know the film’s stars are capable of so much more. Witherspoon and Kutcher play Debbie and Peter, who hooked up once 20 years ago and have been best friends ever since. We know they’re best friends because they keep telling us they’re best friends, but their exchanges never convey the comfort or substance of such a crucial, two-decade bond. Even though they live across the country from each other, they still talk every day in some form, and while their conversations are breezy, they lack a believable spark. McKenna quickly establishes that they’re opposites through the use of familiar genre tropes. Split screens show that Debbie lives in a cluttered and colorful Los Angeles Craftsman while Peter lives in a sleek and spacious Brooklyn condo overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge. (The backgrounds are extremely green-screeny.) She’s a perky and uptight single mom; he’s a sardonic charmer with commitment issues. She walks through a quiet, leafy neighborhood while he walks through the bustling city streets. They’re so different! Could they possibly end up together? McKenna’s script keeps them physically apart for the vast majority of the movie...

The movie tells the story of long-time best friends Debbie (Reese Witherspoon) and Peter (Ashton Kutcher) who are complete opposites — accountant Debbie lives in LA and wants a stable routine with her son Jack, meanwhile brand consultant Peter loves the fast-paced life New York City has to offer. When they swap houses and lives for a week, the pair find out what they truly need rather than what they might want. "So, it made me laugh to think about what would’ve happened if Ted had to come to my house and take care of kids. That was the genesis of it. I actually then cast Ted in the movie playing [a] doorman. So, you can see the inspo for the movie,in the movie.” Here's everything we know about Your Place or Mine... Ashton Kutcher as Peter. Your Place Or Mine: 14 Thoughts I Had Watching Reese Witherspoon's New Rom

Well, if you’ve been looking forward to seeing Reese Witherspoon star in yet another film that could one day land on the list of best romantic comedies, the past weekend was for you. The Oscar-winning actress joined with recent That ‘90s Show guest star, Ashton Kutcher, to bring everyone with a Netflix subscription the new rom-com Your Place Or Mine, and I was right there watching with millions of others over the weekend, as viewers have helped the movie dominate Netflix’s Top 10 movies list for several days now. Critics might be torn over whether or not the movie really works, but what’s more important to me is that the film brought up a lot of thoughts about the characters, the story and life in general as I watched. So, let’s get into them and see if you agree with me on some of the finer points of this rom-com! (Image credit: Netflix) The Idea That Neither Of These People Suspected The Other Might Be In Love With Them Is Already Crazy You’re probably wondering why I feel this way, right? If you take the word of rom-coms, anyway, this kind of loony love misunderstanding (“He just wants to be friends!”“She’d never want me! I’m a mess!”) happens positively all the time. But, when you appear to spend your first waking hours every day on a phone call with your best bud of the opposite gender (even when you’re literally in bed with your girlfriend), how does it not occur to you that your “best friend” might also be in love with you, too? (Image credit: Netflix) Does Peter Do...
