Northern India’s first nuclear plant to come up in Haryana’s Gorakhpur: Jitendra Singh

He added that during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s regime, one of the major achievements would be the installation of nuclear/ atomic energy plants in other parts of the country, which were earlier confined mostly to the southern states like Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh or in the west in Maharashtra. The minister said that the Department of Atomic Energy has also been given permission to set up joint ventures with PSUs for resources to open atomic energy plants, having the potential to fulfill India’s energy needs in times to come. According to Department of Atomic Energy, Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojana’s(GHAVP) having two units of 700 MWe capacity each of Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) indigenous design is under implementation near Gorakhpur village in Fatehabad district in Haryana. Till date, an amount of ₹4,906 crore has been spent out of total allocated funds 20,594 crore. Construction of other Main Plant buildings/structures viz. Fire Water Pump House (FWPH), Safety Related Pump House (SRPH), Fuel Oil storage area-1&2 (FOSA-1&2), Ventilation stack, overhead tank (OHT), Switchyard Control Building, Safety related & Non-safety related Tunnel & Trenches, Retaining walls and Garland Drain is progressing well. Announcing it in New Delhi on Saturday, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, and Earth Sciences Jitendra Singh said that during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, one of the major achievements would be the installation of nuclear/atomic energy plants in other parts of the country, which were earlier confined mostly to south Indian states like Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh or in the west in Maharashtra, according to a statement from the Department of Atomic Energy. Singh said that this is in keeping with the priority to increase India’s nuclear capacity, a number of path-breaking decisions were taken in the past eight years. He added that Prime Minister Modi’s government has given the nod to a bulk approval of the installation of 10 nuclear reactors. First nuclear power plant in north India is under construction

The first nuclear power plant (NPP) being built in the northern part of India is coming up in the state ofHaryana at Gorakhpur about 150 km north ofthe nationalcapital, Delhi. India’s Atomic Energy Minister Jitendra Singh said last week that, for the first time in India, NPPs were being built in areasof the country other than the south and the west. Speaking to media persons in the capital, Singh said that in a bid to increase India’s nuclear capacity, the government had earliergiven approval forthe construction of 10 reactors. In 2017, the government approved the fleet mode construction of ten indigenously made pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWRs) of 700 MW capacity each. In July 2020, India achieved criticality with its first indigenously built 700 MW pressurised heavy water reactor for unit 3 of the Kakrapar NPP inGujarat state in western India. (Total Financial progress is 23.8% as on date). • Purchase orders for major long manufacturing cycle equipment/components like Primary Coolant Pumps, Calandria, Reactor Headers, Refuelling Machines Heads, Moderator and other D20 Heat Exchangers, etc. are already in place. • End Shields and all Steam Generators for the first unit have been received at site. • Construction of Water Duct from Tohana to GHAVP for meeting operational cooling water requirements has been taken up through Haryana Irrigation & Water Resources Department (HI&WRD) as deposit work and progressing well. The Union Minister for Science and Technology recently announced that a new nuclear plant is to be built in Gorakhpur, Haryana. This will be the first nuclear plant in North India. The plant is to be built on 560 hectares of land. It will generate 2800 MW. The foundation stone was laid in 2014. However, construction is just beginning. The first phase is to be complete by 2025 and the second phase is by 2028. As the second phase completes the plant will be in full operation generating 2800 MW.
