What is this medication? CHLORPHENIRAMINE; DEXTROMETHORPHAN (klor fen IR a meen; dex troe meth OR fan) is a combination of an antihistamine and a cough suppressant. It is used to treat the symptoms of a cold. This medicine will not treat an infection. This medicine may be used for other purposes; ask your health care provider or pharmacist if you have questions. COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Maxi-Tuss DM, Robitussin, Robitussin Children's Cough & Cold, Scot-Tussin DM, Vicks NyQuil Cold & Cough What should I tell my care team before I take this medication? They need to know if you have any of these conditions: •asthma •heart disease •glaucoma •kidney disease •liver disease •long lasting (chronic) cough •prostate problems •taken an MAOI like Carbex, Eldepryl, Marplan, Nardil, or Parnate in last 14 days •an unusual or allergic reaction to chlorpheniramine, dextromethorphan, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives •pregnant or trying to get pregnant •breast-feeding How should I use this medication? Take this medicine by mouth. Follow the directions on the package label. Use a specially marked spoon or container to measure each dose. Ask your pharmacist if you do not have one. Household spoons are not accurate. Take your medicine at regular intervals. Do not take it more often than directed. Talk to your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine in children.
