OnePlus 10T review: More power for less money

The OnePlus 10T targets power users with top-tier performance and charging plus good battery life. And it's $150 less than the OnePlus 10 Pro. But OnePlus drops features like wireless charging, a telephoto camera and more, making the OnePlus 10T a device with weirdly limited appeal when compared to the Google Pixel 6 Pro or the OnePlus 10 Pro. Starting price: $649/£629 Display: 6.7-inch FHD AMOLED (2412 x 1080) Refresh rate: 120Hz/90Hz/60Hz Chipset: Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 RAM: 8GB/16GB Storage: 128GB/256GB Rear cameras: 50MP main (f/1.8), 8MP ultrawide (f/2.2), 2MP macro Front camera: 16MP (f/2.5) Battery: 4,800 mAh Charging: 150W wired Software: Android 12 with OxygenOS 12.1 Size: 6.4 x 3 x 0.34 inches(163 x 75.3 x 8.7mm) Weight: 7.2 oz (203g) There's nothing overtly wrong with the OnePlus 10T. But over the course of reviewing the latest high-end device from OnePlus, I couldn't help but feel this handset traded away its character in favor of performance gains, like a friend who suddenly gets too into working out. For this mid-life revision of the OnePlus 10 Pro, OnePlus decided to strip out a lot of what makes the OnePlus 10 Pro one of the best Android phones. Instead, the focus with the 10T is more on speed and power. The phone’s new silicon and charging standard offer impressive results, but it's hard to see that the extra performance and $150 cheaper start price is worth missing out on the better display, Hasselblad cameras, and the ever-convenient OnePlus alert slide...

OnePlus 10T vs. OnePlus 10 Pro: How the Flagship Phones Compare

Prior to CNET, Sareena worked at CNN as a news writer and Reuters as a producer. The OnePlus 10T smartphone revealed in August signals the company's plans to continue the "T" brand it's pursued on and off since 2016 -- essentially releasing a midcycle phone with smaller upgrades. The performance-focused OnePlus 10T joins the OnePlus 10 Pro in the Chinese phone-maker's flagship lineup. On sale in the US and UK now, it starts at $649 for the base model (8GB, 128GB), and $749 for the more powerful model (16GB, 256GB). UK pricing is £629 and £729, respectively, and the base price converts roughly to AU$1,135. As a performance-focused phone, the OnePlus 10T features a state-of-the-art processor, a heck of a lot of RAM, a large battery, fast charging and the largest cooling system ever in a OnePlus phone, according to the company. (For specifics, you can scroll down to CNET's specs chart.) That said, the 10T makes some compromises in pursuit of performance. The alert slider, such as the one seen here on an earlier OnePlus phone, has been a feature of OnePlus phones for years. The company removed it from the 10T, saying it was a "necessary tradeoff" to hit performance and price...

There was no OnePlus 10 to be succeeded, and there's no 10T Pro now either, so the 10T is in somewhat of weird spot - superior to the 10 Pro is some ways, not quite as good in others. The upgrades come in areas that one easily associates with OnePlus. On the one hand, is performance - the new model uses the latest Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, the TSMC-made version coming with improved speed and efficiency. It's coupled with the most advanced cooling system the company has made, so it can make the most out of that chip. And then there's charging speed - the 150W charging capability of the OP10T sounds excessive on paper, but it does make it one of the fastest charging handsets we've seen. Not being a Pro, the 10T does make some concessions in other areas, key among them being the camera. The rather unimpressive setup is missing a zoom camera (a 3x one present on the 10 Pro), and the ultrawide one is a midrange-grade unit (if even that). That only leaves the main camera with some proper imaging chops, but it, too, is hardly cutting edge. A similarly not-quite-flagship bit is the display - sure, it's a 120Hz capable OLED, but it omits the granular adaptive refresh rate we've come to expect from ...
