The initial dose of Pitocin should be 0.5-1 mU/min (equal to 3-6 mL of the dilute oxytocin solution per hour). At 30-60 minute intervals the dose should be gradually increased in increments of 1-2 mU/min until the desired contraction pattern has been established. They need to know if you have any of these conditions: • Any condition where vaginal childbirth is unwanted, such as cervical cancer, herpes infection, oversized fetal head • Dangerous position of the fetus, placenta, or umbilical cord • History of uterine surgery, such as cesarean section • Pregnant many times before • Uterus overstimulated • An unusual or allergic reaction to oxytocin, other medications, foods, dyes, or preservatives • Pregnant or trying to get pregnant • Breast-feeding How should I use this medication? This medication is for infusion into a vein. It is given in a hospital or clinic setting. Talk to your care team about the use of this medication in children. Special care may be needed.
