Nashik: Over 350 cyclists participated in the three-day cycle wari from Nashik to Pandharpur that began on Friday morning from the Govind Nagar area of the city. This is the 12th edition of the three-day cycle wari being held between June 9 and 11. The cyclists will pedal 360km to reach Pandharpur in three days. On Friday, the wari covered a distance of 160km to reach Ahmednagar via Sinnar and Rahuri, where the participants took a halt.

This 800-year-old tradition is a distinctive part of the Maharashtrian culture and is the ritualistic essence of the Wakari Panth (a sampradaya within the Bhakti tradition). Four processions take place in the months of Chaitra (March-April), Ashadh (June-July), Kartik (October-November) and Magh (January-February). Of these, the Ashadhi Ekadashi Wari is the most popular. The onset of the monsoon is a convenient time for the Warkaris. As most belong to agrarian communities, they commence the 21-day journey after sowing seeds for the season, a time when their fields require not much work or attention. Men in Gandhi caps, women with tulsi pots on their heads, saffron flags, musical instruments, bhajans, kirtans and tastefully decorated vehicles that play melodious devotional music are characteristic of the Wari today; however, this was not always the case. Pandharpur Wari is an annual yatra to Pandharpur – the seat of the Hindu god Vithoba in the Indian state of Maharashtra, in honour of the deity. Palakhis carrying the paduka (foot prints) of various saints – most notably Dnyaneshwar and Tukaram – from the Warkari (one who performs the Wari), are taken from their respective shrines to Pandharpur. The tradition is more than 700 to 800 years old.This March on foot from various locations in Maharashtra to Vithoba temple, Pandharpur. The journey takes 21 days.Numerous palakhis join the main Tukaram and Dnyaneshwar palkhis that starts from Dehu and Alandi respectively. The wari culminates at the Vithoba temple on Ashadhi Ekadashi. Upon reaching Pandharpur on Ashadi Ekadashi, these devotees take a holy dip in the sacred Chandrabhaga River/Bhima River before proceeding to visit the Vitthal temple.
