Every year on September 25, World Pharmacist Day is observed with an intention of promoting and advocating the role of the pharmacist in improving health. It also serves as a reminder to honour all the health care professionals who offer their services with compassion and understanding. Pharmacists provide people with access to medications and offer advice on how to use them safely. This year, the theme is ”Pharmacy united in action for a healthier world“ which aims to strengthen solidarity and showcase pharmacy’s positive impact on health. World Pharmacists Day, which takes place on 25 September each year, is a celebration of every pharmacist, pharmaceutical scientist, and others who are part of this field. Around 4 million people are engaged in this profession around the globe. Pharmacy united in action for a healthier world ‘Pharmacy united in action for a healthier world’ is the theme of World Pharmacists Day 2022, which aims to showcase pharmacy’s positive impact on health around the world and to further strengthen solidarity among the profession. Its organiser, the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), is inviting colleagues from all sectors of the pharmacy profession to take part in the campaign and show the world how pharmacists are united for health, regardless of and overcoming conflict, different politics and cultures, and economic disparity. Pharmacists are the skilled professionals who provide us with the right medicine and advise us on how to properly take them. When we fall ill, we don’t get super anxious because we know that the help of these professionals is always available. The expertise of these healthcare professionals has helped people even more during the coronavirus pandemic. World Pharmacists Day is celebrated on 25 September every year to honour pharmacists all around the globe for their crucial role in improving everyone’s health. Using their expertise and knowledge, Pharmacists ensure that the medicines prescribed to patients are suitable, the supply is within the law and patients are properly educated on the potential side effects. This year’s theme for World Pharmacist Day, set out by the International Pharmaceutical Federation, is ‘pharmacy united in action for a healthier world’. The day encouraged activities that promote and advocate for the role of the pharmacist in improving health in every corner of the world. We spoke with Peninsula Health Director of Pharmacy, Nicholas Jones, to learn more about the profession. How long have you been working in Pharmacy? I’ve been a pharmacist for 30 years, starting with my internship at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in 1992. I’ve since worked in hospitals in Melbourne, Darwin and the UK as a clinical pharmacist, an educator and then a manager. I came to work at Peninsula Health as Director of Pharmacy in 2017. What is your favourite aspect of working in Pharmacy? One of my favourite aspects of hospital pharmacy is working as part of a team. Pharmacists bring a really valuable perspective and skills to clinical teams providing direct patient care, but also to projects looking to implement change and improve the quality, safety and accessibility of care.
