GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS TO HELP RELIEVE INDIA’S HUNGER SITUATION

India ranked 101st out of 116 countries on the 2021 Global Hunger Index rankings, having a score of 27.5, which is considered “serious” by GHI. Currently, there are various hunger-fighting initiatives in India, out of which some of the most impactful initiatives are as under: • National Nutrition Mission • National Food Security Mission • Zero Hunger Programme • Eat Right India Movement • Mid-day Meal Programme National Nutrition Mission National Nutrition Mission, also known as POSHAN (The Prime Minister’s Overarching Scheme for Holistic Nutrition) Abhiyaan is Government of India’s flagship programme to improve nutritional results for children, pregnant women and lactating mothers. This mission was launched by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of the International Women’s Day on 8 th March, 2018 from Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan. The POSHAN (Prime Minister’s Overarching Scheme for Holistic Nutrition) Abhiyaan draws the attention of the nation towards the issues of malnutrition and address it in a mission-mode. There was a very important role of NITI Aayog in shaping the POSHAN Abhiyaan. NITI Aayog released the National Nutrition Strategy in September, 2017, which presented a micro analysis of the issues continuing to happen within this area and chalked out an in-depth strategy for the possible solutions.
