The 2022 midterms are the first significant group of elections since President Joe Biden won the White House, and Democrats face strong political headwinds in their quest to keep control of both chambers of Congress. In many states, voters will also select governors, attorneys general and secretaries of state, three roles with significant oversight of future elections. There are 35 seats up for election in the Senate. Of those, 21 currently belong to Republicans and 14 to Democrats. Republicans would need a net gain of one seat to win a majority in the Senate, which is currently held by Democrats with 48 senators, plus two independent senators who caucus with Democrats, and with Vice President Kamala Harris as the tie-breaking vote. All 435 U.S. House seats are up for election this year. Of those, 212 currently belong to Republicans and 220 to Democrats, with 3 seats vacant. Assuming Republicans retain the one vacancy formerly held by a Republican, the party would need a net gain of 5 seats to take the House majority back from Democrats.
