Mumbai, May 27 (PTI) The Akshay Kumar-led period drama “Prithviraj” will now be titled “Samrat Prithviraj”, Yash Raj Films (YRF) announced on Friday following multiple discussions with the Shree Rajput Karni Sena that had objected to the earlier name on grounds that it was disrespectful. YRF’s decision comes a day after the Karni Sena wrote to it demanding a title change. The group — its protests had led to a name change for Sanjay Leela’s Bhansali’s 2018 period film“Padmavat” — wanted the title of the film on the legendary warrior king to reflect his status as ‘Samrat’ (emperor). “As per the multiple rounds of discussions between us, and to peacefully and amicably resolve the raised grievance, we will change the title of the Film to ‘Samrat Prithviraj’,” the production house said in its response to Karni Sena national president Mahipalsingh Makrana. “We are highly appreciative of the mutual agreement reached between us that you have no further objections with regards to our film and that all other points raised by you earlier are no longer a point of contention between us,” YRF said in the letter. The banner went on to thank the Karni Sena and its members for understanding its “good intentions” on the depiction of the great warrior in the film, directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi and featuring Kumar as the Rajput king. Story Samrat Prithviraj opens in a gladiator-like setting in Ghazi, Afghanistan where a frail, blinded Samrat Prithviraj (Akshay Kumar) is seen exhibiting his valour as he locks horns with ferocious lions. A crowd of spectators along with Sultan Mohammad Ghori (Manav Vij) hold their breath and watch this display of raw masculinity and bravura. The period drama then hits the rewind button and takes us through some chapters of Samrat Prithviraj's life. Right from the First Battle Of Tarrain where he had his adversary Mohammad Ghori at his feet to how this 'last Hindu king' had to face defeat and then ultimately death, owing to a betrayal. In between, the makers also squeeze in how Prithviraj has to deal with his future father-in-law Jaychand (Ashutosh Rana) in order to marry his daughter Sanyogita (Manushi Chhillar), who is head over heels in love with him. Direction Dr Chakraprakash Dwivedi picks up elements from the Braj epic poem 'Prithviraj Raso' and other literary accounts to build his film, Samrat Prithviraj. Despite having an absorbing plot, the filmmaker who is also the writer of the film, fails to structure it in a way that it has the right mix of drama and action. Initially, the characters speak in epithets which also distracts you a bit. There are places where the storytelling feels rushed. But Dr Chandraprakash Dwivedi really, really wants his movie to be feminist y'all. Almost 100 years before Razia Sultan took Delhi's throne, director Dwivedi shows how a Hindu queen took seat by her king at court, gave her inputs and opinion even as disapproving old men spat at the idea of it. Of course, the ideals of treating women as living-breathing humans with desires, ambitions, fears and agency go out the window as soon as an opportunity to make them dance in matching costumes in face of horrifying death presents itself. This obsession with myth more than the man, is mostly what sinks Samrat Prithviraj. Dwivedi's Prithviraj (played by Akshay Kumar) is already righteous, brave, benevolent and all for female empowerment when we first meet him. He tackles lions and fights battles for the honour of a 'naachnewali' in the first 10 minutes of the film.
