Chennai: As soon as you drive up to the beach at Pazhaverkadu (Pulicat), fishermen knock on car windows and offer you rides across the lagoon on their boats, for a price. A two-hour boat ride, which includes bird watching and even photography, costs around 1,500. Return to the beach and they’ll serve you food and if you want to stay the night, they’ll set up a tarpaulin tent and a bonfire on the beach. How much you pay depends on how well you bargain. “Star gazing at the lake was an amazing experience. We enjoyed the entire trip as it helped us experience a day in the life of the local fishermen,” said Jai K, who was there in February. The local fishermen, faced with dwindling catch, have turned fly-by-night tourism operators. There are some 20,000 fisherfolk in 13 villages around the lake. And they do what they can to survive, though they know it’s not strictly legal. “We have all mostly stopped fishing. The lake is almost dead and the catch from the sea is also not like before,” said Antony, 37, who bought a second-hand motor boat for 67,000 and earns 800-1,000 a day ferrying tourists around, much more than he did as a fisherman.
