12 clips recovered, 1 more accused identified in Chandigarh University video leak case

By Manjeet Sehgal: The Punjab Police probing the Chandigarh University hostel video leak case, have recovered 12 clips of a woman student and identified one more accused in the case. The cops have already taken three accused -- the girl who made the videos, her rumoured boyfriend from Shimla and his friend -- into custody in connection with the case. All three have been sent to seven-day police custody. Now, police have identified one more person, identified as Mohit, who has links to the video leak case. On Tuesday, the cops recovered the WhatsApp conversation of the accused girl, according to which the student was speaking to one Mohit, who asked the girl to delete the photos and videos from her mobile device. On this, the accused girl replied that she had to delete a photo of a student taking a bath after she found out that she was being captured. Meanwhile, it was also revealed that the accused Sunny Mehta and his friend Rankaj Verma had allegedly threatened to make the woman student’s private videos viral unless she filmed and shared videos of hostel inmates in the common washroom. A total of three mobile phones, seized from Mehta and his friend, have been sent for forensic examination. The cops have also seized the laptop of the girl student. Following the preliminary investigation, police arrested a woman student and a youth from Himachal Pradesh, and said she appeared to have shared videos with him of only herself. Another person was later on Sunday taken from Himachal by the Punjab Police in connection with the case. As protests continued, amid apprehensions that police and the administration of Chandigarh University were trying to hush up the matter, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann ordered a high-level probe and promised “severest of severe action”. Punjab’s Additional Director General of Police Gurpreet Deo visited the university campus along with other senior officials to take stock, and to reassure students that they had found only videos of the arrested woman. Mann appealed to students not to fall prey to rumours. There was chaos on the university campus on Saturday night as students poured out of hostel rooms to hold a protest and videos of “unconscious” women students being evacuated flooded social media, amid claims that some of them had committed suicide. On Sunday, Mohali Deputy Commissioner Amit Talwar clarified that the suicide claims too had no truth, and some girls had just fainted in the melee and were provided medical assistance.
