Senior Advocate R Venkataramani Appointed Attorney General of India

Senior advocate R Venkataramani was on Wednesday appointed as the next Attorney General of “The President is pleased to appoint R Venkataramani, Senior Advocate as Attorney General for India for a period of three years from the date he enters upon his office," read the notification. He would most likely join the constitutional office on October 1. Venkataramani, 72, has remained a former member of the Law Commission and has been in the Supreme Court for more than 40 years. Born on April 13, 1950 in Puducherry, Venkatamanani has practised in various branches of law, prominently constitutional law, law of indirect taxes, human rights law, civil and criminal laws, consumer law, as well as law relating to services. He has represented the central government, several state governments, universities, public sector undertakings in their major litigations in the Supreme Court and various high courts. Venkataramani enrolled in July, 1977 in the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and moved to the Supreme Court in 1979. He was designated as senior advocate by the apex court in 1997. The attorney general is the top law officer of the Centre and enjoys the right to appear in any court in India. Senior Advocate R Venkataramani has established himself as one of the most erudite and astute lawyers of India, dealing in matters as varied as constitutional law, environmental law, taxation, tribal rights, and child and women’s rights. He has represented several state governments, the Union government, universities and public sector undertakings in major litigation in the Supreme Court and in High Courts. A former member of the Law Commission of India, Venkataramani has completed 42 years of practice in the Supreme Court. He has also been a Special Senior Counsel for various departments of the Government of India in the Supreme Court and High Courts between 2004–2010 and has also been acting as Counsel for the Supreme Court in matters about the service conditions of employees of the Court. Mr. Venkatramani is a lawyer with an experience of 42 years of practice in the Supreme Court. He enrolled in July 1977 in the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and joined the chambers of Mr. P.P. Rao, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court in 1979. He then set up an independent practice in the Supreme Court in the year 1982. He was designated as Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court of India in the year 1997. Appointed as a Member of the Law Commission of India, in 2010 and again for a further term in the year 2013.
