"Our fight is not against the party, it is for the party. Eknath Shinde kept the flock together when Uddhav Thackeray wasn't available," he says. A former Congressman, Amol joined the Shiv Sena in 2015. In 2021, he was appointed the leader of Opposition in his municipal corporation. "Ever since saheb (Uddhav Thackeray) became the Chief Minister, he neglected his party workers on the ground. The problems particularly aggravated in the last two-three years. Look at the NCP, even they were part of the government but Irrespective of which side wins this battle of perception, the churning – first of its kind in the 56-year-old history of Shiv Sena – will determine the survival and the future of the party. The Quint spoke to party workers on the ground and political observers to understand the inside story of the Shiv Sena mutiny. Maharashtra Politics News: Devendra Fadnavis speaks to MNS' Raj Thackeray ahead of floor test

Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Maharashtra assembly, Devendra Fadnavis spoke to Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) supremo Raj Thackeray on Wednesday seeking his support ahead of the floor test on June 30, sources have revealed. Raj Thackeray has extended support to the BJP, Republic TV has learned. Notably, the MNS has one MLA in the assembly. It is pertinent to mention here that Shiv Sena rebel MLA Eknath Shinde had also spoken to the MNS chief twice, once when he was in the hospital for a hip replacement surgery and second when he reached home after being discharged. The Thane strongman had not only inquired about the MNS chief's health but also discussed the ongoing political situation, sources revealed. As things stand, there are at least 39 Sena MLAs, 2 Prahar Janshakti Party MLAs, and 7 Independents in the rebel camp. With the support of the BJP's 106 MLAs, the brigade can easily topple the Uddhav Thackeray government and cross the halfway mark in the assembly. The Shinde camp with 50 MLAs is expected to fly from Guwahati to Goa today before reaching Mumbai for a floor test tomorrow, sources have reported. Fate of floor test hangs in limbo; SC to decide at 5 PM After closely observing the political drama unfolding in Maharashtra following the rebellion of Shiv Sena Minister Eknath Shinde, BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday night met Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari. The former Chief Minister submitted a letter to the Governor, urging hi...

Should it come to merger, Shinde may have a natural ally in MNS

With the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena arguing that the Eknath Shinde faction cannot claim to be a separate group even if it has two-thirds majority and must merge with another party, the latter is said to be exploring that option. And the first party on its list is said to be the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), an earlier offshoot of the Sena, led by Uddhav’s cousin Raj Thackeray. Shinde is learnt to have spoken to Raj Thackeray over the phone, though ostensibly to enquire about his health following a hip-replacement surgery. Raj was discharged two days ago. The Shinde faction claims to have 50 MLAs, 40-plus of them from the Sena and the rest either Independents or from smaller parties. With the total strength of the Sena being 55 MLAs, Shinde already has more than the two-third mark of 37. Click here for more Highly placed sources in the Shinde camp said that “if the situation so demands”, they had three options: the MNS, Prahar Janashakti (whose MLAs have already extended it support) and the Officially, rebel leader Deepak Kesarkar said, “We are not going to merge with any party. We are very much a part of the Sena. Since a majority of the members are on our side, we should be considered the real Although the BJP should be a natural partner — given the Sena’s long association with it and given that the rebel leaders have questioned Uddhav’s decision to dump it for the Congress and NCP — a section with Shinde is not keen on merging with the dominant, all-consuming nat...

Raj Thackeray’s MNS loses its only MLA in Maharashtra to Shiv Sena

MUMBAI: In a serious setback for Raj’s party, which had won 13 seats in the 2009 state assembly elections, is thus now left with no representative in the state legislature. The downfall was hastened in 2017 with six of seven MNS corporators in the BMC switching over to the Shiv Sena. Sonavane, a Shiv Sainik who was denied a ticket during the 2014 assembly polls, had joined the MNS and won the Junnar seat. He said on Monday that he had informed MNS chief Raj Thackeray about his decision to join the Sena. “I was never upset with the MNS. But I am basically a Shiv Sainik and wanted to join the party which I loved the most,” Sonavane said. Many MNS workers from Junnar also joined the Sena on Monday along with their legislator. However, Sonavane’s return to the party fold has upset Sena’s local leaders from Junnar who are hopeful of getting the party ticket for the assembly polls. They had threatened to resign but have been advised by the party leadership to stay put. Sena’s Asha Buchke, who contested the assembly polls from Junnar twice in the past, reached Mumbai to meet Uddhav Thackeray on Monday. Buchke told TOI, “I met Uddhavji and discussed the issue for about 40 minutes.

Raj Thackeray urges BJP not to contest Andheri East bypoll to show reverence to deceased MLA

MUMBAI: Maharashtra Navirman Sena chief While Fadnavis has admitted that the letter was sent to him in good faith, he said that he would have to discuss with the party leadership before taking a decision. In a letter addressed to the BJP leader, which he posted on social media, Raj Thackeray said the MNS will not be contesting the November 3 byelection to show its reverence for the deceased legislator. "The Andheri East bypoll was necessitated after the death of sitting MLA Ramesh Latke and his wife Rutuja has filed her nomination. The MNS will not contest the election as our way of paying reverence to the departed soul," the MNS chief said. Appealing to Fadnavis, Raj Thackeray said, "I sincerely request you not to enter the byelection and field a candidate against Rutuja Latke. I have witnessed late Ramesh Latke's journey and growth in the political arena." Ramesh Latke, the sitting MLA from Andheri East, died of a cardiac arrest in May this year. The Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) have decided to support Rutuja Latke, who is contesting from Shiv Sena Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray party. Reacting to Raj Thackeray's appeal, BJP MLC Prasad Lad said, "Neither Uddhav Thackeray nor any of his colleagues contacted the BJP requesting or appealing to its leaders to not contest the bypolls. They were sitting in their ivory tower." "The decision of not contesting the bye-poll will be taken by leaders Devendra Fadnavis and Ashish Shelar, who is the Mumbai BJP unit chief,...

We are fire, but not 'Raj Thackeray': The Revolutionary Goans who outdid AAP, TMC in state poll

Mumbai: Cars rolled in and out of the driveway as 39 newly elected MLAs flocked the Goa legislative assembly to swear their oaths. But in their midst, a lone, black two-wheeler throttled in. Perched pillion was a young man in a white shirt and blue jeans, with a ready smile and a thumbs-up for the cameras. This was 28-year-old Viresh Borkar, the new MLA for the St Andre constituency, who trumped the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) sitting legislator, Francisco Silveira, in his debut election. As Borkar swore his oath in the assembly Tuesday morning, his party, the Revolutionary Goans (RG), described it as a “goosebumps moment” for the ‘POGO family.’ POGO is the party’s acronym for those whose interests it champions — People of Goan Origin. The party, which began life as a social movement in March 2017 with an agenda to protect and fight for the ‘sons of the soil’, took the Goan political fray by storm this election. Not only did the party, whose election symbol is a football, score its first goal with an MLA, it also garnered the third-highest voteshare in the state overall, at almost 10 per cent. This was more than competitors such as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) or the Trinamool Congress (TMC) could claim. Moreover, it dented the Congress’ fortunes, eating up a significant share of the anti-incumbency votes in more than half a dozen constituencies. “It’s a miracle,” RG chief Manoj Parab told ThePrint over the phone later that day. “We decid...

Rutuja Latke: MNS chief Raj Thackeray, Eknath Shinde group MLA & Sharad Pawar seek unopposed bypoll in Andheri (E)

MUMBAI: After deciding not to field a candidate for the Andheri (E) by-election, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena on Sunday came out in support of Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray)'s candidate Rutuja Latke. In a letter to deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday, MNS chief MLA Pratap Sarnaik, from Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena camp, has also written to his party colleague and chief minister Eknath Shinde urging that the bypoll be won unopposed by Rutuja. In a letter shared by Sarnaik's team late Sunday, he requested Shinde to speak to BJP to withdraw the nomination of their candidate Murji Patel. NCP chief 04:37 Andheri East bypolls: Sharad Pawar pitches for Rutuja Latke, says let her be elected unopposed Raj’s pullout may help Uddhav camp in Andheri (East) bypoll Reacting to Sharad Pawar’s appeal for the Andheri (E) bypoll to be held unopposed, Shiv Sena party president Uddhav Thackeray said the NCP chief had shown the “real culture of politics in Maharashtra” and his party would always be grateful to him. MNS chief Raj Thackeray’s request to the BJP to withdraw its candidate is a significant development considering the fact that the bypoll is a testing ground before the BMC election for both the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), which is backed by Congress and NCP, and BJP supported by the Eknath Shinde-led Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena. According to political analysts, MNS’s absence in the bypoll may help Uddhav’s candidate as Raj’s party mainly targets the same...
