Rajasthan govt uncovers fraud in old age pension scheme, lost over Rs 250 cr in 4 yrs

By Jaykishan Sharma: The Rajasthan government has uncovered a fraud in the state's Old Age Pension Scheme. An audit run by the Social Justice Department has revealed that several ineligible people, including teenagers and government employees, received pensions under the scheme for a period of four years. By the time forgeries came to light, the government had already lost over Rs 250 crores. Rajasthan's Old Age Pension Scheme was launched with the aim of providing financial assistance to senior citizens in the state. According to the audit report, between 2019 and 2022, teenagers aged 13-15, government officials and employees, and even their spouses, managed to receive pensions under the scheme. The audit found irregularities in about 2.7 lakh accounts. The findings of the audit report were confirmed by Rajasthan's minister for social justice Tikaram Jully who said that action has been initiated against those responsible. ALSO READ | When did this scheme start? The scheme was introduced by CM Ashok Gehlot during his previous stint as chief minister between 2008 and 2013. Back then, the scheme ensured a pension amount of Rs 500 per month for the elderly. The amount was recently raised to Rs 1,000 per month and the scheme currently covers around 1 crore people, including widows and disabled individuals. How was this fraud discovered? Minus 3.3 Degrees In Rajasthan, Weather Office Issues Severe Cold Warning Rajasthan Cold Wave: The minimum temperature was recorded at minus 3.3 degrees Celsius in Fatehpur in Sikar and in neighbouring Churu it was minus 1.1 degrees. The weather department has issued an 'Orange Alert' for severe cold wave conditions in many areas of the state in the coming days. Jaipur: Cold winds from the country's northern parts swept across Rajasthan as the minimum temperatures in Fatehpur and Churu dropped below the freezing point, a meteorological department official said today. Temperatures on Friday night dropped by one degree Celsius across Rajasthan, the weather department official told news agency Press Trust of India. He added that the department has issued a cold wave warning for many parts of Rajasthan. The minimum temperature was recorded at minus 3.3 degrees Celsius in Fatehpur in Sikar and in neighbouring Churu it was minus 1.1 degrees Celsius, according to the meteorological (MeT) department. Elsewhere in Rajasthan, Nagaur recorded a minimum night temperature of 0.3 degrees Celsius, Sangaria and Sikar each recorded 0.7 degrees Celsius, Bhilwara 1 degree Celsius, Ganganagar 1.1 degrees Celsius, Pilani 1.9 degrees Celsius and Chittorgarh 2.7 degrees Celsius. The MeT department said the minimum in most of the districts of the state has dipped below five degrees Celsius.

Cyclone Biparjoy to enter Rajasthan on June 16, North Western Railway cancels trains

By India Today News Desk: Cyclone Biparjoy is likely to enter southwest Rajasthan on June 16, according to an official of the Jaipur Meteorological Centre. In view of the cyclone, the North Western Railway (NWR) has cancelled some train services in the region. A statement by NWR read, “Keeping in view the safety and security in view of the cyclonic storm Biprajoy in the Bay of Bengal, train services are being cancelled/partially cancelled by the Railways.” Captain Shashi Kiran, Chief Public Relations Officer of North Western Railway, said in a statement that in view of the cyclonic storm Biprajoy, the services of five trains operating on the NWR have been cancelled from the originating station, while the services of nine trains have been partially cancelled. “The activities of thunderstorms and rain are likely to start in the districts of Jodhpur and Udaipur divisions only after the afternoon of June 15 due to the impact of the storm,” Captain Shashi Kiran said. On June 17, the effect of the storm is likely to continue in the form of heavy rains in Jodhpur, Udaipur and Ajmer divisions and some parts of the surrounding areas. There is a strong possibility of this storm reaching Saurashtra-Kutch and the coast adjoining Pakistan as a very severe cyclonic storm on June 15. Thereafter, it is very likely to move north-eastwards and weaken gradually, he said.
