Annual Convocation for the 2023 batch held at Chandigarh University; more than 1400 degrees awarded CHANDIGARH, India, June 12, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- "Chandigarh University has set new benchmarks of quality higher education by featuring among the World's Top Universities, " said former President of India Ram Nath Kovind, who addressed the annual Convocation 2023 at Chandigarh University, Gharuan on Friday. More than 1,400 students were awarded undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD degrees during the annual convocation out of which 45% are women. Further, 22 girls out of 35 have been conferred Gold Medals. 21 girls out of the total 35 have received their doctorate degrees. India Elects 'Untouchable' President From Lowest 'Dalit' Caste

LONDON — India chose an “untouchable” as its next president Thursday after the first contest in which both candidates were from the lowest tier of the country's caste system. Ram Nath Kovind, nominated by the ruling BJP party, had been clear favorite for the largely ceremonial post, which is decided by 4,800 lawmakers across the country. Under India’s constitution, the prime minister and his ministers wield executive power but the president sometimes plays a role such as deciding which party should form a government if a general election is inconclusive. Kovind, 72, is not the first president to be “Dalit,” a term that means “oppressed” in Sanskrit and refers to members of the lowest caste.
