Punjab government increases petrol and diesel rates, second hike in four months

For representational purposes CHANDIGARH: The AAP-led Punjab Government has increased petrol price by 92 paise per litre and diesel price by 88 paise for retail consumers, as part of their additional resource mobilization drive. With the second hike, in one year, the state hopes to generate a revenue of Rs 600 crore per annum. Rampant smuggling of diesel and petrol from other states to Punjab, due to the price difference, is said to increase. There are 3,500 petrol pumps across the state of which 1,400 will be affected as these are located on the highways and border areas. Sources point out that as the spending on the committed liabilities, subsidies and social security pension increases the government has had no other option but to increase the price of petrol and diesel. Talking with TNIE, Executive Member of the Petrol Pump Dealers Association, Punjab, Ashwinder Singh Mongia says, “ The state government has again increased the VAT on petrol and diesel yesterday by issuing a notification. This is the second hike in the last four months, and it puts a massive financial burden on consumers. Petroleum dealers face a financial burden, too. In the last four months, the government has hiked petrol and diesel by Rs 2 per litre. Now diesel is Rs 5 costlier in Punjab than in Chandigarh and Rs 4 in Himachal Pradesh. When asked if any cess has been imposed on petrol and diesel, Housing and Urban Development Minister Aman Arora said, “Cess (VAT) has been imposed”. “Cess (VAT) has been imposed because, for a long time, its need was felt and I think Punjab today needs revenue generation,” Arora said. “The Cabinet gave its approval for a marginal increase in the VAT rate levied on the sale of petrol and diesel in the state. The increase in the VAT rate will lead to a marginal increase in the price of petrol and diesel by approximately 90 paise per litre.” Notably, with this move, the cash-strapped state government has eyed to mop up additional revenue. This is the first tax on fuel imposed after the Aam Aadmi Party came to power last year.

Punjab Government on Sunday increased the Value-Added Tax (VAT) on fuel by 10 per cent, taking the price of petrol and diesel in the state up by 92 paise per litre and 88 paise per litre, respectively, for retail consumers. With the implementation of the new rates from Sunday midnight, the prices in Mohali stood at Rs 98.95 per litre of petrol and Rs 89.25 per litre for diesel. The state’s state Excise and Taxation Department has issued a notification in this regard. The fuel hike, second time during the current year, is said to be announced as a part of the State Government’s decision regarding additional resource mobilization. With the move, the government is expecting to generate an additional revenue of Rs 600 crore every year. Punjab Petrol Pump Dealers’ Association claimed that petrol is available for Rs 96.20 per litre in Chandigarh, Rs 96.29 per litre in Himachal Pradesh, Rs 97.34 per litre in Haryana, and Rs 97.5 per litre in Jammu. Similarly, the diesel price in Chandigarh is Rs 84.26, Rs 85.44 in Himachal Pradesh, Rs 90.19 in Haryana, and Rs 83.26 per litre in Jammu. Petrol and diesel prices increased in Punjab by 92 paise and 88 paise per litre, respectively, following the upward revision in value-added tax (VAT) on fuel by the state government, a move which drew a sharp reaction from the opposition parties. Calling the increase in fuel prices an “anti-people” decision of the AAP government, the opposition parties said it would put an additional burden on the common man and farmers. Following the increase in VAT, retail prices of petrol (in Mohali) rose to Rs 98.95 a litre and of diesel to Rs 89.25 per litre, fuel pump owners said on Sunday. The new retail prices have come into effect from midnight of June 10 and 11. This is the second time that fuel prices were increased this year. In February, the AAP government imposed a cess of 90 paise per litre on both petrol and diesel. The notification with regard to the increase in VAT on fuel was issued by the state excise and taxation department on Saturday. Mohali-based fuel owner Ashwinder Singh Mongia said VAT on diesel has been increased by 1.13 percentage points to 12 per cent, while tax on petrol has been increased by 1.08 percentage points to 15.74 per cent.
