The RBI was established on April 1, 1935, under the RBI Act of 1934, on the proposal of the “Hilton – Young Commission.” It began as a privately owned bank before being nationalized on January 1, 1949, following India’s independence. The RBI is headquartered in Mumbai, but it was originally based in Kolkata before moving to Mumbai in 1937. The Governor of the Reserve Bank of India is appointed by the Government of India.
