This act makes education a fundamental right of children between the ages of 6 and 14. PUNE: The 8,828 schools registered with the Right to Education Act's admission web portal in Maharashtra have 1,01,969 seats, but there were 3,14,651 applications from across the state. The last date for applications has been extended to March 25. A notification issued by the primary education directorate on Friday said, "As per parents' request, the last date for submitting applications has been extended to midnight on March 25. No further extensions will be given." Primary education director Sharad Gosavi said that the record number of applications was a result of increased awareness about the scheme and also due to the ease in the application process brought about by the department. However, activists feel that many fake applications would also have got through making it harder for genuine applicants to get a fair chance at admission and that the government must improve the scrutiny process of the forms. Pune district has the highest number of applications against the available vacancy in Maharashtra. In Pune, 936 schools have registered for the academic year 2023-24 with a total RTE intake capacity of 15,655. As against this, till Friday evening, 68,308 applications were received. It means that there are four students are vying for each seat. More applications will be filed now that the deadline has been extended.
