What is an RTU HVAC System?

Considering an RTU HVAC for your business? If you’re adding or replacing heating and air conditioning equipment in a commercial space, your contractor may recommend an RTU HVAC unit. What exactly is an RTU? It stands for “roof top unit.” So now you can guess that this type of HVAC equipment lives on the roof. It’s a self-contained unit that provides both heat and air conditioning for certain types of spaces. Keep reading to learn more about the RTU HVAC system, and find out if it may be a good choice for your commercial space. How is an RTU HVAC different from other HVAC systems? We mentioned that an RTU HVAC unit lives on the roof. However, other types of HVAC equipment can also be installed on a roof, such as split-system air conditioning condensers, or water-cooled chiller systems. So what makes an RTU HVAC system different? An RTU is sometimes called a “packaged unit” because it includes all the components of an air conditioning and heating system in one box: • an AC evaporator coil, which absorbs heat • an AC condenser coil, which releases heat • an AC compressor, the heart of the air conditioning system • a heat source • a fan to blow heated and cooled air through the ducts • an intake for outside air (to improve ventilation) The RTU HVAC unit provides all the heating and air conditioning needed for your space. The heated and cooled air reaches different areas in the building via ductwork and registers. You’ll also have return registers to pull air back into the syst...

The Modbus RTU protocol is a means of communication that allows data exchange between programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and computers. Electronic devices can exchange information over serial lines using the Modbus protocol. It has become widely accepted and is used extensively in the construction of The protocol was developed and published by Modicon® in 1979 for use with its programmable logic controllers. It is built using a master/slave architecture and supports serial devices that use the RS232/RS485/RS422 protocols. Modbus is often used in scenarios where multiple instrumentation and control devices transmit signals to a central controller or system to gather and analyze data. Industrial automation and supervisory control and data acquisition ( What does Modbus RTU stand for? Modbus RTU (Remote Terminal Unit) is one of the two transmission modes defined in the original Modbus specification. The two modes are Modbus RTU and ASCII and are both designed to be used with serial devices supporting the RS232, RS485, and RS422 protocols. A distinguishing characteristic of Modbus RTU is its use of binary coding and strong CRC error-checking. Modbus RTU is the implementation of the Mod...

Packaged Rooftop Unit (RTU)—Understand Your HVAC

January 19, 2022 · 3 min read A packaged rooftop unit, or RTU, is a type of HVAC system that contains all the components needed to provide conditioned air in one compact unit. You typically use packaged rooftop units in light and large commercial applications. They are very popular with retail and industrial properties. A packaged rooftop unit is usually a large metal box containing the following components: • Expansion device • Evaporator • Compressor • Air-cooled condenser Packaged rooftop units typically connect directly to a ductwork system that distributes the conditioned air through a space and returns it to the packaged rooftop unit. An RTU controlled by a thermostat blows and receives conditioned air directly through ductwork Depending on the building, you could be stuck footing the bill for millions of dollars in HVAC repairs before the building can be occupied. Avoid expensive post-sale surprises with this HVAC due diligence checklist. How a Packaged Rooftop Unit Works First, air returns back to the packaged rooftop unit from the space the unit is ventilating. Some units also mix outdoor air with the returning air to produce fresher air for the space. The air then moves through a rack of filters. Then it continues to the The air then flows through a blower, leaving it conditioned and ready for the space. Some units have small heating elements near the blower to further adjust the air’s humidity. There is usually a clear, insulated divide between the evaporator co...
