Samarth Ramdas: A Great Guru of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj

Samarth Ramdas motivated the people to believe in themselves. He suggested aiming for self-realization (or Freedom) through self-actualization. His teachings included the combination of devotion and meditation with the worldly powers for individual transformation. Samarth Ramdas stressed more on the equality of all human beings. He encouraged women to take up key roles and triggered the confidence to participate in religious events. He worked to bring about equality in gender and caste equality. Samarth Ramdas was insisting on physical fitness. He has a well built physical body and used to exercise regularly. Samarth Ramdas lost his Father at the age of 8. This made him to turn introvert and engrossed in the thoughts of Lord Rama. At the age of 12, Lord Rama himself appeared before Samarth Ramdas and suggested him to chant the Rama Taraka Mantra. The Rama Taraka Mantra was to be chanted 108 times every day at least once. Upon lord Rama’s suggestion, Samarth Ramdas started chanting the mantra regularly. It is said that he has had uttered Rama’s name 13,00,00,00,000 (13 crores) times in these 12 years. Lord Rama then accepted Samarth Ramdas as a disciple and named him Ramdas. Samartha Ramdas was the pole star in the galaxy of saints that India has ever produced. Most famously known as Sant Ramdas, he was intensely devoted to Lord Rama. A contemporary of Shivaji and Sambhaji Maharaj, he was a saint, philosopher, poet, author, spiritual stalwart and many more roles rolled into one. Ramdas was a fiery saint with a warlike ideals and Shivaji Maharaj was a warrior with saintly ideals. Both had not met till sometime, despite having worked in the same dharmic and socio cultural arena. Finally, when they met, it was Shivaji who sought guidance on both military strategies on the worldly level and spiritual wisdom on a paranormal level from Sant Ramdas. Here is how it happened. Shivaji being a king, naturally knew about Sant Ramdas through several informants. One fine day, burning curiousity overpowered him and he left to Kondhaval to meet him. Despite sincere efforts, Shivaji Maharaj failed to get a darshan of Ramdas and days passed in fervent anticipation. Unable to take it anymore, Shivaji decided to pray to Bhavani Devi to allow him a darshan of Sant Ramdas, visited the temple, prayed, and stayed overnight there. Samarth Guru Ramdas Swami took samadhi on Falgun Krishna Navami. This day is celebrated by his followers across the country as 'Das Navami' festival. He spent the last time of his life at the fort of Parli near Satara in Maharashtra. Since then this fort was named Sajjangarh and his tomb is also located there. THE REVOLUTIONARY TEACHINGS OF SAMARTH RAMDAS

The guru of Shivaji Maharaj, Sant Ramdas né Ramdas Swami, or simply Ramdas, in his teachings advocated a combination of devotion, meditation and military training. Like many of his contemporaries, he did not believe in pacifism but social, political and martial activism. Even saints and other renunciants, according to him, should not withdraw from society or become indifferent to their environment and surroundings, but positively engage in reforming the lived life of the members of the society actively and, if necessary, even take to violence for its moral transformation. He preached activism for both the saints and the laity and upheld the view that laziness leads to temporary ephemeral pleasures but hard work leads to perennial happiness. He encouraged the youth to individually and collectively revolt against the prevalent ills in the society, oppressors, aggressors and looters. He cajoled them to exercise regularly and become physically strong, as the weak are incapable of purging the evils from society. He argued that only the strong and those with a fighting spirit would be able to establish the rule of dharma or righteousness. They alone can perform their duty towards society, its culture and values, and gladly accept martyrdom if need be. The aim of the army of such a youth would be to establish a free and independent society, ‘not for narrow selfish individual gains but for upholding the moral and spiritual principles of society’. Contents • • • • Who was Samarth Ramdas? Samarth Ramdas was also known as Sant (saint) Ramdas or Ramdas Swami. He was an Indian Marathi Hindu saint, poet, philosopher, writer and spiritual master. He was a devotee of Hindu deities Rama and Hanuman. He was previously famous as Narayan. Where was he born? He was born at Jamb, which is a village in present-day Jalna district of Maharashtra. He was born on the occasion of Rama Navami, in 1608. He was born to Suryajipanta and Ranubai Thosar, into a Marathi Deshastha Rigvedi Brahmin family. His father was a devotee of Surya. His father died when Narayan was aged around seven years. His Works Ramdas had written several literatures during his lifetime. His literary works include Karunashtakas, Dasbodh, Yuddhakand, Sunderkand, Poorvarambh, Antarbhav, Chaturthman, Aatmaaram, Panchman, Panchsamasi, Manpanchak, Janaswabhawgosavi, etc. Ramdas is not deemed a pacifist. His writings include strong expressions encouraging nationalism to counter aggressive Muslim invaders. His Legacy Ramdas served an inspiration for several Indian thinkers, historians and social reformers from 19th and 20th-century, including Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Rajwade, Keshav Hedgewar, and Ramchandra Ranade.
