Leading science cities by the numbers

Beijing and Shanghai have made considerable progress since 2015, gaining on and overtaking some of the United States’ top science cities. Boston, New York and San Francisco have meanwhile fallen slightly in their output of science papers within the Nature Index. Changes to each of the leading five science cities’ adjusted Share since 2015 are shown below, along with a breakdown of the top collaborating institutions within each city. Because large network organizations, such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences, span multiple cities, we have counted their constituent bodies instead when calculating the number of institutions in the top 500 of the Index. All population statistics date from 2020. GDP per capita figures in Chinese cities date from 2021 and in US cities date from 2019. All currency data expressed in US dollars. Science City at Union Station (Kansas City)

We spent the better part of the day here with two boys ages 9 and 12. We arrived just after the 10am opening and were able to enjoy many exhibits before it was too busy. There were a couple of school groups and children of all ages. The boys enjoyed every activity and we only had to wait a few minutes for most. They especially liked the outdoor playground. About noon the crowd thinned some. We left about 1 for lunch and returned about 2 to revisit some activities and explore those we missed. Far less people. Overall we spent about 4 1/2 hours. There were activities for all ages and everyone got along and took turns. We certainly got our money's worth and had a great outing. Union station opened its doors to the public in October of 1914. It is an excellent example of Beaux-Arts architecture which had been very popular but was beginning to go out vogue. Rail passenger travel peaked during WWII but then fell victim to jet planes and the Interstate highway. In 1971 Amtrak took over the country's passenger train system. They felt that they could not justify the expense of the structure for the few remaining trains and moved out the early 80s. By that time the building was deteriorating rapidly. It is fortunate that the edifice did not end up becoming a parking lot, the fate of many other American rail stations. There are lots of activities at the station but it is worth a visit just to view the building itself. If possible enter through the doors on Main St. There is an extens...
