BALAMANI AMMA was an INDIAN POET From “GOD’S OWN COUNTRY”KERALA. She is referred as AMMA and “MUTHASSI” of Malayalam poetry. She was the mother of the famous writer “KAMALA SURAYYA” “A JOURNEY THROUGH HER LIFE” BALAMANI AMMA was born on 19th July 1909 in PUNNAYURKULAM, THRISSUR, KERALA. She did not attend any school.



Known as the grandmother of Malayalam literature, Balamani Amma is famous for her works like ‘Amma, Mazhuvinte Katha’ (The Story of the Axe), and ‘Sandhya’. Balamani Amma was born on this day in Punnayurkulam in Kerala’s Thrissur district in 1909.



BALAMANI AMMA'S major collection of poetry, Nivedyam, is an anthology of 162 poems which highlight the achievement of more than 6 decades of her poetic career. These poems reflect the three main areas of her life-long concern, namely the role of woman, the state of society, and the upward urge of the human spirit.
