On July 14, 1933, Hitler’s government declared the Nazi Party to be the only political party in Germany. On the death of Hindenburg in 1934 Hitler took the titles of Führer (“Leader”), chancellor, and commander in chief of the army, and he remained leader of the Nazi Party as well.

Adolf Hitler was the undisputed leader of the National Socialist German Workers Party—known as Nazis—since 1921. In 1923, he was arrested and imprisoned for trying to overthrow the German government. His trial brought him fame and followers. He used the subsequent jail time to dictate his political ideas in a book, Mein Kampf—My Struggle.



For this, Hitler is found guilty of treason and spends five years at Landsberg prison, where he infamously wrote “Mein Kampf”. Several years later, after becoming a chancellor and having passed the Enabling Act in 1933, Hitler merges the chancellor and president titles and becomes the Fuhrer in 1934.
