Namdev (also called Nam Deo or Sant Namdev or Saint Namdev) was a prominent bhakti poet amongst the earliest of those who wrote in the Marathi language. Namdev was born in the year 1270 in the village of Naras-Bamani, located now in the Satara District of Maharashtra to a lower-caste tailor named Damashetti Relekar and his wife, Gonabi (Gunabai).
