Ruthenium tetroxide is a stronger oxidizing agent than OsO4 and can perform many oxidation reactions. It will cleave olefins to aldehydes or ketones, oxidize aldehydes to acids, alcohols to aldehydes or ketones, ethers to esters, and amides to imides.
