A half-wave rectifier with transformer and capacitor is shown in Figure \(\PageIndex{6}\). Figure \(\PageIndex{6}\): Half-wave rectifier with transformer and filter capacitor. One way of looking at the inclusion of the smoothing capacitor is to consider that it, along with the load resistance, make up an \(RC\) discharge network.

A full wave rectifier is defined as a type of rectifier that converts both halves of each cycle of an alternating wave (AC signal) into a pulsating DC signal. Full-wave rectifiers are used to convert AC voltage to DC voltage, requiring multiple diodes to construct.

and full-wave (uses both cycles of the AC signal), but this experiment will focus on full-wave because it is more widely used in real world applications. Perhaps the simplest full-wave rectifier circuit is the diode bridge rectifier shown below, so that is the circuit you will experiment with in the lab.

The reason is that the full wave bridge rectifier without the capacitor basically takes the absolute value of the original sinusoidal waveform, so the waveform repeats itself every half the period. Thus the frequency doubles and the period halves. 1/(2*60)=0.00833s=8.33ms.

In half-wave rectification, a single diode or rectifier is used to block current during half of the voltage cycle.

How do you convert AC to DC? The circuits that do that are called Rectifiers. Turns out there are different kinds of rectifiers, some simple and some more advanced. In this video, we will learn the simplest kind of rectifier, a half wave rectifier. Created by Mahesh Shenoy.

The image above shows a typical application circuit of a half-wave rectifier. From a 120 volts AC 60Hz wall outlet, there’s a fuse, F1, for protection and a transformer to step down the AC voltage into the desired voltage.
