September 17: Telangana’s ‘Rashomon’ Moment

Hyderabad: Like in Akira Kurosawa’s famous film Rashomon, September 17, the day the erstwhile Hyderabad State under the Nizam merged with the Indian Union in 1948, is interpreted differently by different parties in Telangana. For BJP, it has been ‘Telangana Liberation Day’, while the TRS government this year decided to observe the day as ‘Telangana National Integration Day’. CPI commemorates September 17 as the successful culmination of the Telangana armed struggle led by the Communists – which the party says forced the Nizam to merge Hyderabad State with the Indian Union. The day has come into focus this year with the Centre recently deciding to organise year-long celebrations to mark 75 years of ‘Hyderabad State Liberation’. Union home minister Amit Shah would attend as chief guest at the inaugural event on September 17 in Hyderabad. The State of Hyderabad which was under Nizam’s rule was annexed into the Union of India after a police action code-named ‘Operation Polo’ that culminated on September 17, 1948. Besides Telangana, the erstwhile Hyderabad State included parts of present day Maharashtra and Karnataka. The BJP has been demanding for many years that the state government celebrate the officially. HYDERABAD: Telangana Congress will come out with a total of nine declarations culminating into a huge public meeting in Secunderabad on September 17, coinciding with the merger of erstwhile Hyderabad state into the Indian union in 1948. By September 17, Telangana Congress will release SC, ST, minorities, women, welfare and governance-cum-administration declarations so that they can be taken to every family in the state before the elections. Of the nine declarations, the party has already released two of them with the one for farmers by Rahul Gandhi in Warangal and for youth by Priyanka in Rangareddy district. Telangana to celebrate National Integration Day on Sept 17

By Poulomi Saha: The Telangana government has decided to observe September 17 as “Telangana National Integration Day.” The decision was taken by Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao during a state cabinet meeting on Saturday, September 3. On September 17, 1948, erstwhile Hyderabad State under Nizam rule merged with the Indian Union. CM KCR said the government would organise three-day celebrations beginning September 16 to mark the historic day. Massive rallies will be organised with the participation of students, youth, men and women in all the headquarters of the Assembly constituencies on September 16. According to the official statement released by the Telangana CMO, on September 17, the chief minister will unfurl the national flag in the public garden and deliver his speech. On the same day, ministers and other public representatives would do the same at their respective centres. KCR will also inaugurate Banjara Adivasi Bhavan on the same day. A massive rally will be taken out with cultural performances including Gussadi Gondu and other art forms. After that, a public meeting will be held at the NTR Stadium where the CM will be the chief guest. On September 18, freedom fighters of the state would be honoured in all the district headquarters besides felicitating poets, artistes and other personalities. Telangana BJP chief urges CM to commemorate September 17 as Telangana Liberation Day

Explaining in detail the events in history, which led to the liberation of Telangana State, Sanjay Kumar made an appeal to the Chief Minister to use the funds being given by the Central government for the construction of a Telangana Liberation Memorial by the year 2022. He urged the State government to immediately identify land for the same. The Karimnagar MP also demanded that the State government financially rescue and protect the families of freedom fighters who had laid their lives for the liberation of Telangana, in addition to felicitating those who participated in the movement against the Razakars on September 17, every year.
