Chandigarh airport to be named after Bhagat Singh: The need for naming places after unsung heroes

The Congress ruled Punjab in 2017 passed a resolution in the state assembly to name the airport after the freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. Haryana kept stalling it. While there was an agreement of sorts between the two states to name it after Bhagat Singh, the details like if Mohali also will be part of the name or if Panchkula too should find a mention kept delaying an agreement. Finally the th year of India’s independence from the British colonial rule the nation has officially paid tribute to the young revolutionary who sacrificed his life for India’s freedom. An unnecessary faceoff between the two states, Haryana and Punjab, ended in a much deserved solution, a name that will find acceptance all over the nation. It is a pity that a solution which was available even when the airport was getting ready took such a long time to resolve. There is so much in a name that lovelorn Juliet had questioned. It transcends time and age even veteran politicians argued over a name in Chandigarh. However all’s well that ends well. The Chandigarh international airport will remind the country’s youth the gallant freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, burning the flame of nationalism in hearts of the present and future generations.
